I am currently a navy deferred resident in Anesthesia and am feeling a little disconnected from my military brethrin. I see a lot of my fellow resident collegues wearing their alma mater pins on their white coats. I would like to put my rank and oak leaf on my lapel of my white coat. Would this be appropriate??

Sorry, no. People do it, but not within uniform regs.
 
At NNMC, the only people wearing rank/branch on the collar of their white coats are nurses and corpsmen. (why are nurses and corpsmen wearing long white coats? well, that's another discussion...) I've seen a wide variety of pins on the lapels of physician coats, but never any rank/branch.

there are a plethora of navy/military pins out there, why not pick one of those to show your squidly pride?

I'll be the cynic this time. Probably because some senior nurse wanted to be able to try to pull rank. I am sure the official line was that it identified you as an officer/doctor/whatever. Still wrong, wrong, wrong.

If someone needs to be identified, have your hospital ID clipped to your lapel. Me, I just assume everyone knows me.
 
He's not talking about working in a military hospital. He is in a civilian hospital and for some reason (to not feel so distance from the mililtary?) he wants to wear his rank around. I think that's a little silly so I asked him to think about exactly what he is hoping to accomplish by doing this.

I have done rotations at places (Wright-Patt actually) where I (and everyone else) was told to wear rank on their scrubs. Yes, that's silly. But it would be even more silly for me to wear it at my civilian job.
 
ActiveDuty, I totally get where your coming from. I think I have resigned myself to wearing a Navy scrub cap and maybe wear a Go Navy pin. Thereby preserving my military roots without looking silly.

So you want to wear something to show of your Navy pride...got it. How exactly will that make you feel more connected to your military brethren?

The scrub cap idea sounds a lot better to me.
