I am currently a DC dissatisfied with the chiropractic profession. I applied to a few medical schools last year, got one interview, but wasn't accepted (I absolutely bombed the interview 🙁 ). I've applied to more schools this year but I'm starting to get discouraged.

My MCAT scores are about 7 years old, so that limits the schools I can apply to and I'm not sure I'm up to taking them again.

Luckily, my wife is very supportive and so is my twin brother (who is an MD).

I'm not really sure why I'm doing this. I've only ever posted to a forum once or twice in my life. I guess I'm looking for a little encouragement. The interview feedback of this site has already been helpful.

What schools will accept your old MCAT scores?

Not sure about the availablity in Canada but look into taking a Kaplan course and retaking the MCATs. With a good score (I'm assuming the rest of your academic record is passable because you got an interview) you will be in much better shape. Yes this will take time, but balanced against the rest of your life isn't it worth it?

u from AB? i applied to U of A but i not only got rejected, they didn't even look at my application cuz they had MCAT scores cut offs that I didn't know about +pissed+ what a waste!
anyway, i think u'll have a better chance by re-writing ur MCAT even if u had good scores, cuz comon, 7 yrs is too long ago and some scinece has changed since then, and u gota show them that ur still as smart or even smarter than u were 7 yrs ago, im following my own advice and gna retake it.

Have you considered osteopathic medical schools? It is a bit late in the process (I think or think not) but you can still try. Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and UMDNJ- School of Osteopathic Medicine are less than 3 hrs from DC. Maybe you can call them up and explain your situation. I heard of a very successful DC who went to my school. He had a very lucrative practice in Long Island which he maintained during medical school. He would take a car service to and from Long Island and study during the trip. To learn more about osteopathic medicine visit this site:

I wish you the best with all of your endeavors!

I agree with the other person who suggested retaking the MCAT. If you really want to do this you have to jump through all the hoops that the rest of us do, and one of those is to have a current MCAT score. I know it's a pain in the ass but I think a 7 year old score is too old. That being said, it's still totally possible - if this is really what you want, it is possible! I graduated college without a unit of science classes and now I'm an MSII, if I can get here, anyone can!

University of Alberta and University of Calgary both accept MCAT scores as long as the test format hasn't changed.

Hehe! I guess I was a little unclear in the title of my original post. I am a DC (Doctor of Chiropractic), not from DC.

Unfortunately, all the DO schools I looked at required current MCAT scores. If I re-take it, I might look at applying to DO schools.

Thanks for the advice.

DO here, was an "older" student (early/mid thirties when I went), and previous health professional (people complain abouth the DO vs. MD thing, how about the lame PT vs. DC thing...anyway...

Re-take the MCAT. I would recommend taking a study/refreshe course. I did the Princeton review that helped tremendously!!!! I never would have gotten in if I hadn't taken that course. I had been out of school for well over a decade before I took it. Wow, I forgot a lot. Take it, rock it and apply! Just bite the bullet and study your a$$ off. If you hate what you are doing now, imagine what you'll be like in 10-15 years if you don't go to medical school. You'll always have that "what if" thing bugging you...I know I would have.

Thanks for the kick in in the... um, I mean the encouragement.

(I agree the PT vs. DC thing is pretty lame. I've had patients go to PT and be told not to go back to me because I'll undo all the good they did. I've also encountered PTs that have encouraged patients to keep doing chiro because we're working toward the same goal.)

PM me if you have any questions!!! Let my know your status re: applying and taking the MCAT.

Listen dude the bottom line is that you have got to retake the MCAT. No other way around it.

Hi, I just want to say that if you really want to do something, you can. You've already proven that you are capable of going through chiropractic school, which isn't exactly easy. I think that for some people it takes them longer to realize what they want out of life. If you are not satisfied with being a chiropractor and you think medical school is the way you should go, go for it! Many great doctors had to apply to medical school more than once. Just don't give up on your dream!

I got a letter from U of A yesterday. I got an interview!

In other news, U of O turned me down 🙁. I missed their out-of-province cutoff by 0.02 points on my GPA. Their in-province standards are waaaay lower 😡. Oh well.

Still waiting to hear from the others.

My interview at U of A went well (I think... you never can tell, really). The roads were awful and parking was virtually non-existent. I had to park on the roof of the parkade, then run down 5 flights of stairs and to the back of another building. I arrived at the check-in 3 minutes after my interview was supposed to have started 😱 . They took me to the waiting area and I just had time to sit down when they called my name. I didn't even have time to be nervous! 😎

Everything seemed to go well, but I have to wait another 2-3 months before I find out anything.

I have an interview at U of C on Saturday and they've changed to the multiple mini interview (MMI) format. I get 10 ten-minute interviews. It's the first year they've tried this. I'm a little nervous, but I feel bolstered by my experience at U of A.

Wish me luck!

-A
