First, I'm a non-traditional student applying into medical school next year and won't be pursuing a MD/PhD route. Yet, as a graduate student and future medical student, I want to appreciate how research is conducted and perhaps do some of my own someday.

My dilemma is this...I've spent a year or so giving thought to creating a community initiative for the pediatric population and wanted to make it my graduate project. Yet, when discussing it today with one of my professors, he said he read that something similar is happening here already. We looked it up together and saw it. I spent various times doing online research but haven't heard nor read a word about a similar initiative until now. I felt discouraged because it is something I felt passionate about. But now, I have to scrap it and find something else to do. My feeling now and how I've always felt is 'what can I do research on when it's likely been done or someone is already working on it?' I'll think of an idea sometimes, then I find it online somewhere that someone has already been working on it. Have any of you ever felt the same when trying to come up with ideas?

Master the literature before making a project and specific aims. It will save you from this issue.

Be glad you found out when you did as opposed to getting scooped last minute.

Ya got scooped!

It happens. Cry a little if you need to, but move on quick.

Part of what makes research so challenging yet fun is it's dynamic nature!
