I am extremely discouraged I am not getting the grade that I want in General Biology 1 I am looking at a C. This semester I took a few history classes and I am doing well in those but that C is going to give me a 3.00 or a 2.9. I was wondering has any of you been in this same situation. Should I retake General Bio 1 instead of going on to bio 2 and take bio 1 again this summer or online this spring? I don't know what to do please help me. Next semester here is what my schedule will look like at the University at Albany, my current major is history and pre-pharmacy.
General Bio 2 (Maybe) General Bio 1 (Online at a local CC they don’t offer Bio 1 in the spring)
General Chem 1
Calculus
2 Upper level History classes towards my major

You don't have to retake General Bio 2. A 3.0 or even 2.9 is just fine!! You don't have to retake the class online, it will be more stressful for you. Have a back up plan, don't be discouraged as things will get better eventually.

Best!

~C

Don't be too sad, study a lot for the final and do kick ass... as in try for C+ or B... if you end up with a C, its ok, move on. Just prove you can handle science classes in bio 2 and in chem. Basically, make sure theres improvements - everyone has a bad semester. 1 C isn't so bad!

Thanks that helped alot, I figured I should ask someone who was taking the pre-reqs because my pre-health advisor specialty is people who are pre-med there is not alot of pre-pharmacy majors here at Suny Albany

The primary question here is what is the causal agent for your grade:

Do you feel that the material was difficult and weren't able to grasp all the material? Or is it exogenous factors, as in you had other things going on this semester, or it was a poor learning environment, etc.

If its the former, I'd work a lot harder to see how you do in bio II. That'd be a fair indication of whether a science path is for you.

If it's the latter, perhaps retaking it with a clean slate this summer (i'd still take bio II this term) will fetch you an A.

Either way, approach Bio II with more focused study as it may be a determinant in what you plan on doing.

Go for a good final like they said but...

The real question is why history? If you wanna be a pharmacist and those history classes are eating up your study time perhaps you should consider doing just pharm classes. Just a suggestion (I dont actually know you and the reason you are receiving a C.) 😉

P.S. How do you like Albany so far?

The Professor that I have is horrible it was a team taught class a man taught for the first 2 tests and a women is teaching now and she is horrible. Her tests are killer. I have taken Bio before at a CC but it did'nt transfer as gen bio 1 and I got a B+ in it. Not to mention I have 500 kids in my class that sucks too. History is very intersting its my backup plan. I might just work on pharmacy next semester though. I AM 100% POSITIVE that Pharmacy is my first choice is something that I wanted to do since high school, but my public school didnt offer AP courses or calculus(I know a damn shame) so anyone at my school who wanted to do health sciences couldnt apply right out of highschool because we were'nt prepared like we should have been. I am going to work twice as hard for Bio 2 and I will keep u guys posted

Although inherent responsibility rests with the student, the professor can make you pull your hair out. My suggestion to anyone is to scout out which professors to take before enrolling for future semesters. If you college only has one professor that teaches a certain class and this professor is unreasonable, take the class at another college (making sure that it will be accepted by a pharmacy school). You are in control of your fate.

Also, courses will only get tougher, so learning how to manage your time and learning what you will be tested on is a skill that you have to acquire. Historically, I start off a semester slowly, and my grades are not the best. However, I quickly learn how to adjust to the "types" of questions that the teacher focuses on, and my grades improve from there on out.

Your academic record depends more about your motivation than your intellect. If you are willing to put in the time, you will succeed.

Good luck to you and hope for the best for you.

Your schedule for next semester seems like too much for you right now.

You can't afford any more C.

I suggest you take either general chem 1 or Cal in the summer and concentrate on your classes as much as possible.

Thanks, I will keep u guys posted and yea I am going to look on ratemyprofessor.com and check around on campus for my future professors reputation. I have learned so far this semester just because a professor has a PHD does not make them a better teacher.

Having a PhD rather implies you're a really bad teacher. The reason is because universities don't want good teachers... they want good researchers that'll reel in the money and prestige.

Not necessarily. I've had good and bad professors that hold a PhD just as I've had good and bad professors that just held a Masters.

I agree, ask around, or try ratemyprofessor.com, or similar websites. It really really can make a difference, especially as you get to Organic chemistry and the other more difficult courses. Of course it depends on how you learn, I learn best by hearing it, so a great book but a worthless teacher is a bad combo for me.
