Hi guys, I applied this cycle to around 30 MD schools and 6 DO schools. So far I have received one DO II, three MD II holds, and one MD R. I was complete the very first day of the cycle and had an average of 4-5 day turn around on all my secondary's. I have a 3.3 cGPA, 3.41 sGPA, 3.64 over last 60 credits, and a 518 MCAT. I feel my EC's are about average if not above. I have 1500+ hours combined of clinical experience as a health screener at a plasma center and as a COVID-19 tester. In July I began working as a phlebotomist at my local hospital and have accumulated around 200 hours there. I am hoping to update schools sometime next month. I also have around 500 hours of clinical volunteering, 220 hours of non-clinical volunteering, 200 hours of research, 30 hours of shadowing, 80 hours as a physiology TA, and 100 hours as a student program director. Am I just being too optimistic about my chances at MD schools or am I somewhat competitive? The holds and silence from a majority of schools despite being complete early has me feeling a bit down at the moment.

Well, to start with it is still September. So…
Your GPAs are well below the average for matriculated MD students(cGPA-3.7x and sGPA 3.6x). Your MCAT is very nice but it brings attention to your GPAs. Some ADCOM members might wonder if you are a really smart person but really lazy in school . And that’s not good.

Keep building your application in case you have to reapply. In reality, everyone is sort of rejected until they have an acceptance.

But I’d think you’d have some luck with DO schools. But if you really only want MD, withdraw your applications at DO schools and wait out the MD cycle. Don’t waste your time and money or the schools time and resources if it turns out you only have a DO acceptance and you will be unhappy attending a DO school.

The cycle is long. You can hear anytime between now and next spring.

Would you share the schools you applied to with us? Your problem might be a poorly developed list.

Thanks for your response. My GPA took a big hit during my first year and a half of undergrad. I was unsure of what career path I wanted to follow and it affected my grades heavily. I tried to address this in the personal statement. I am perfectly happy with a DO acceptance, I am just a little disheartened from the non-response from so many MD schools. Like you said though, it is a long cycle and I need to be patient. I will add my school list below. Is there anything aside from boosting my GPA that I could do to improve my application?

Not a bad list, some of those were donations with your sGPA...Utah, Colorado, GT, Kaiser, Dartmouth I would not have added for anyone reading. I worry when I see a 518 MCAT and low sGPA that someone applied too top-heavy but you seemed to have been realistic which is awesome.

I might of missed it but any love from your state schools? That is your best bet imo with a low GPA and high MCAT if your state school(s) aren't high tier.

I got into an MD school with a better MCAT but worse sGPA so not all hope is lost. I got one interview in September and the rest in the spring, but that was pre-covid and obviously very, very school dependent. I am white fwiw.

Thanks for the response. University of Utah is actually my state school. They seem to be a little slower than most when it comes to handing out interviews so I haven't heard back from them yet. The only reason I applied to Colorado was because I have a lot of family there, I know its a long shot. I dont even know why I bothered with Kaiser and Dartmouth lol. Congratulations on your acceptance. I will keep being patient and hold out hope. It is still early I guess.

If you are truly fine going DO, I don't think you have much to worry about. I understand wanting to do MD if possible though.
