Hi guys. Need advice. My first semester of med school went horribly. I don't have any excuses except that I was overwhelmed by the amount of work and didn't know what I was doing which led to depression and general apathy. I failed everything from August to December of first year and was dismissed over Christmas break.

I appealed the decision and won, but the dismissal remains on the transcript with a note stating that my dismissal was overturned on appeal. The school let me take the rest of the year off and I met with educational specialists both at school and privately to help me formulate a study plan and come up with a way to study. I was allowed back in under the condition that I don't fail anything else. I didn't.

When I went back, first and second year was a lot more doable. But I was never a rockstar student. Ended up getting B's and some C's sprinkled in. Third year I got mainly HP in my rotations with one P (surgery) and one H (psych). COMLEX score of 500 and USMLE Step 1 score of 205.

I'm not a big catch score-wise, but I have great evals and am told that I'm efficient and good with patients and in clinicals.

I don't know what specialty I want. Any that'll take me, I suppose but location is important to me because I'm married and my spouse needs to be on the East Coast to be close to his child (with his ex). That disqualifies a lot of DO residencies so I'm applying ACGME mainly with only a couple of DO residencies in the general geographic location where we hope to settle down.

The only specialty I hated is surgery and I'm not competitive for that anyway. I haven't done peds or FM yet but I didn't care for IM but I'll do it if it's my only option. I liked Psych but I'm told it's getting more competitive so I'm open to other specialties. Is there hope for me in the MD match with this dismissal? I worry about not matching.

In situations like these, the advice often given is to apply broadly. Apply to as many programs as you can, but you probably shouldn't bother with any top tier superstar programs. Also, stick to a primary care specialty.

good luck bro.

As a psych resident, I agree that you should be able to obtain a psych spot.
The programs on the coasts tend to be more competitive than the ones in the midwest and south, so I'd definitely recommend planning to apply broadly and not being overly picky. However, you should definitely be able to get a spot somewhere on the east coast in psych if you want to. Good luck!
