Distance Ed Question

I have a dilemma: I can take a course, Animal Nutrition, through Purdue's distance education program, and pay over $800 for it, and it will be done by fall 2007. Or, I can wait and take it at my instate university for half that price, but it won't be done until spring 2008. I wouldn't even bother taking it, but Oregon State requires it and it is a WICHE school... hence the issue. If the difference will get me into school I will pay the cost, but does it really matter if I have the class in before or after the fall semester when my application is in? Any advice will help!

it shouldn't matter as long as that's your only pending pre-req....most schools don't care if you have one pending when they accept you (for example, i got accepted to tufts in march even though i still had to complete 3 credits of social science...which i did this spring). However, to make sure, you should contact the school (either email or call the admissions office).

If you're mature about it, and get the right person on the phone and present yourself well, you could potentially wait to see if you get accepted before having to take the class just for them.

It was not Oregon, but, one of my schools that I applied to this year told me weeks before, on the phone, that I wasn't in, because I called and specifically asked if they could tell me anything. I was prepared to register for a course that I needed ONLY for their school.

I don't know if it was me, or the person I got, but I was given the answer I needed, and unfortunately although it was bad news, at least I didn't register and start a class that I wasn't going to need.

Not sure if you'd follow this route, as it's unusual and could possibly not work out well, but, just throwing it out there.

Do you have to do it through Purdue? I took it through Oklahoma. I forget how much it cost, but it was easily done.

NCSU has a couple to choose from that fulfill the requirement. You could shop around a bit. But one pre-req in the spring shouldn't generally be a problem.

thanks, everyone, for the info and advice. i decided to contact oregon state about the class, to see if its all that important if i get it in this fall or in the spring. they offer a version online, but it has a prerequisite that i don't think i meet. eh. anyway, they're getting back to me on it. thanks again for all the insight, i appreciate it 🙄
