Hi guys,

like wines, the best wine is the wine YOU like. Same as specialty you choose. But there are some "general" characteristics within all specialties that are more than common. Could you guys please describe those for all specialties? For example,

Surgery: detail-oriented, perfectionist, etc...
Internal Med: ....
OB/GYN: ....

Please add the specialty as you can think of.
I'm trying to assess which one suits my personality the best.

I will ask you to draw your attention to the threads listed at the bottom of the page which have a good many lengthy discussion of the various personalities found in medicine.

Winged Scapula beat me to it!

This is an often-asked question both in this forum and in the Pre-Allo/Allo boards.

great ... another flame war begins.

To lazy to do your own search, Surgeons often doing your job for you, talking about wine...I think you're likely an ER doc kinda person.

I don't see any flaming (yet; or at least at the time you posted). dynx is on a roll this am...too much coffee.

I think it fairly common sense to actually do a search before posting a new thread and if that's too hard, simply scroll down to the bottom of the page to look at the Related Threads links. So I see nothing wrong with suggesting to a user they do the same.

I think nykka3 was anticipating a flamewar when everyone comes in here throwing around derogatory stereotypes of other specialties. 🙂

yep! thanks Blade. i was referring to that. i am just patiently waiting for certain members to set if off in 4-3-2-1.....

i love michelle's underwear drawer blog. it is good to laugh at this stuff i guess. it is weird the different stereotypes of obgyns on michelle's blog vs. the scrubs version of the gynee squad. i am matching (hopefully) into obgyn btw.

i am suprised IM is not represented on the 12 med specialties!

Heheh. I'd seen her med student cartoon, but not this one before. Thanks. 🙂 The psych one actually reminds me of a time I was on call a few years ago. I had lost my stethoscope and needed to do an exam on a patient we were admitting. So I asked to borrow one from an ED attending who was sitting nearby. As he handed it to me he said, "Do you know how to use it?" I looked at it quizzically and replied, "I . . . think it looks familiar."

Ok...

<-----Winged Scapula - female surgeon: beyotch/lesbian/haggard troll/possibly all three!

Blade28 - male surgeon: egomaniac/control freak/arrogant arse/too dumb to be internist 😉
I'll play...

RTrain - internist <----- nerdy, boring, vacillating, helpless in the face of anything that can't be fixed by pondering 😉

I'll play.

Tired - Ortho <---- short attention sp....hey, is Sports Center on yet?

Winged Scapula - female surgeon: beyotch/lesbian/haggard troll/possibly all three!

Wait a minute... You forgot the obvious explanation for why all women surgeons are beyotches, lesbians, and haggard trolls... A LOW SAUSAGE DIET. Now that's funny!

<--- Castro Viejo - General Surgery: Male, anal-compulsive, addicted to locker-room humor, possessed of a vocabulary of single syllables, has the endurance of a marathon runner (Seven whole minutes, baby!), and maintain a political, social, and sexual orientation somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun.

Oh yeah... And, of course, I'm Master of the Universe.

😀

I took this test and by far my best matches were ER, Ob-gyn, PM&R, and Derm... none of those specialties were on my radar. My answers were skewed towards not wanting to work long hours and having lots of non-medical interests, so I can see three of those for. I'm really confused about ob-gyn being my #1 match.

All of the rotations that I enjoyed/did well on/thought about actually going into (peds, psych, family, IM) were in the bottom half of the list.

Anyone else have an unexpected experience with this? Am I that out of touch with my own heart?

Well, what did you answer for the question: "Do you love bleeding vagina more than life itself?"

Hmmm... Did you answer "True" to Question No. 36 ("True or False -- I don't believe I would want to be a useful member of society and I love the inside of courtrooms.")?

Just playin'... 🙂

Funny thread.

But jokes aside, here's a link about MBTI personality type and medical specialties that might help the OP.

http://www.ttuhsc.edu/SOM/Success/Who does what.htm

I found it quite true for myself at least.

I think, MBTI works best for people who are really polarized to their likes and dislikes. I think I took it MS3 or 4 year and matched well with a variety of somewhat different fields. I think I had put lots of 6's and 7's (out of 10) to a number questions, and thats why it was more or less useless for me

I'm so embarassed that General Surgery came up #1 for me . . .

It now all comes to light as to why you spend so much time in our little forum instead of with the Ortho guys. You really, really like us! 😉

Nonsense, I don't like anyone.

GI? Really?
I took this test 3 years ago and Neurology was #1. It's #4 now. I HATE neuro! well, I really don't hate it, but I feel inadequate at it so I don't see myself doing it really.
But once again, I'm surprised that family practice is way down on my list...#34. It was near the bottom last time I took the test. And I'm a FP PA for most of my career.
Oh geez.....

Wrong. You like Tiger. 🙂

Perhaps I should keep quiet now... My No. 1 was Urology. 😳

(Followed by No. 2 Thoracic Surgery & No. 3 General Surgery)

My number 1 was Radiology, followed by pathology and nuclear medicine.

There needs to be a question added at the end... Did your *** struggle to get to the end of this questionaire list without leaving cause you wasted so much time?... Most TRUE.

Thanks, that was insightful. I've known I was an INTJ since I first took Myers-Briggs in early college. Those are pretty stable character traits that don't change much. IM would be a much better fit for me intellectually speaking but I'd miss seeing kids. Maybe I should just have my own kids and solve that problem 😉
Again, FP is nowhere on my list. Could be this is the source of my ongoing frustration? (but hehe, EM is, and I tried that and got frustrated, but that's as a PA)

Yeah, so what I do (pediatric emergency medicine) wasn't listed for me.

Pedi was ranked 27.

EM was ranked 3.

I'm not impressed by the survey.
