I have been very fortunate through my life to not face any significant hardship, and I've been struggling a bit to find strong topics for the diversity and adversity secondaries. Here is why I have in mind currently:
Diversity
I've been very involved with marine activities since I was a child. I got my boating license when I was 10, I'm very experienced in offshore fishing, I've been SCUBA certified for over 7 years now (currently working on my rescue diver cert). I was involved in marine conservation projects in high school. I interned as a diver at the largest aquarium in the US last summer (one of my most meaningful activities). SCUBA diving and fishing offshore have taught me a lot about responsibility and being prepared as both can be dangerous (I've been caught in a storm offshore and lost engine power, for example).
I'm thinking out loud, and this is certainly the most unique side of me, but I don't want it to come off the wrong way and sound like some rich kid with money to spend who fishes and scuba dives. Honest thoughts as to how this sounds from an outside prospective would be greatly appreciated.
Adversity
1. I have a minor in Spanish, and after spending a summer taking medical spanish classes in Costa Rica, i interviewed to be a volunteer spanish interpreter at my school's hospital. I was not accepted as a volunteer because I was not fluent enough, which was a big blow to my self confidence after the number of years I'd spent studying spanish. After a month of tightening up my vocabulary, I interviewed to be an interpreter and the free clinic run by the med school at my university, and I was accepted. (interpreting at this free clinic is one of my most meaningful activities)
2. Circling back to the diversity idea, I could talk about the time I got caught in really rough weather offshore, lost power, and had to ultimately be towed back to land. This was a big lesson on preparedness for me, but I'm not sure how appropriate it is for this essay topic given that it's more of passive a passive event that I experienced.
Honest thoughts and criticism are welcome. I'll head back to the drawing board if need be.
