I've been mulling over my diversity essay for quite some time now trying to pinpoint a topic to delve into. A significant portion of my application revolves around advocacy, particularly revolving around barriers for LGBTQ+ people in healthcare, mental health resources and counseling, and accessibility for linguistic minorities and migrants. As these are essential parts of both who I am and my application as a whole, I want my diversity essay to kind of give context to my passion for these issues.

I was thinking of talking about how I grew up surrounded by a very multi-cultural and socioeconomically diverse group of peers of different gender/sexual identities and how we have all been very involved and accepting of these different characteristics. I then go into talking about how obviously this mutual respect and acceptance is not reflected by much of the world around us and this often left to situations with discrimination and harassment, with very little support given by the authorities in our lives in these matters. This demonstrated to me how important it is to acknowledge the obstacles many people face and work to actually support these individuals, thus prompting my interest in pursuing Spanish as a second major and becoming heavily involved in advocacy work both as a teenager and through college.

Does this do enough to show my own personal diversity and the perspective I bring or does it rely to heavily on the diverse backgrounds of those around me?

Do you identify under the LGBTQ+ umbrella? If so, just write about that and your advocacy and involvement in the movement to bring equity to those communities.
Yes, I do identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community! Thank you for your input 🙂 do you think that using that alone as a topic helps me stand out enough?
