DIY post-bad still a solid plan?

Hi everyone,

First I want to thank the really devoted people here who have provided different faqs and information regarding how to maneuvere in this system. This place is a haven of information to a person like me.

I've posted a couple of times and I had a plan in place, but now with recent changes I'm afraid moving forward. I graduated 3 years ago with a B.S. in science education with an overall gpa of 3.05 and a science gpa of 2.83. I spent the last 3 years teaching but want to persue a career in medicine now.

I have some of the prerequisites but not all and got almost straight Bs in college. My plan was a DIY postbac to take 2yrs of chem, retake 1 basic bio course and a genetics course, take biochem, soc, psych, and then load up on high level bio stuff.

With grade retakes this would have gotten me a 3.5 given all As but now I'm looking at a much lower gpa. Is a post-bac like this still a good idea, or is there a better route to take? I've looked into official post-bacs also, but I wouldn't be elligable until I complete prerequisites and take the mcat anyway, so my plan would still start off the same.

I know that you all don't have time to answer everyone's cries for help, but I quit my job to go back to school for a plan that looks like it may not even be relevant anymore. I just can't see a path the way I did when I originally decided to make this change. Any ideas or guidance would be HUGELY appreciated.

If I were you I'd take the required classes for med school first and see if your GPA improved. Then you could apply to one of the programs if it's a 3.0. At the least you'll have a chance once you complete the program requirements. I think it would take more time if you try to do a post bacc on your own, especially since they don't accept grade replacement. I'd suggest looking at professional post bacc's programs that guarantee admission... For instance, VCOM requires a 2.9 minimum GPA for overall and science but doesnt require an MCAT only suggested... Hope this helped a little.

Do you know if that program is one year long? I read that it was 35 credits and then it only listen classes for one year. So.. I guess one year with 35 credits?

Yes, it's July to May I believe. A little less than one year. Lecom has one as well a post bacc and a masters... The post bacc starts in September though... They require a 2.9.

Thank you for the ideas. I've been looking through the list of Post-Bacs for a while as options but it seems to be more of a requirement now that grade replacement is gone.

Yea absolutely take all the core pre read and see where you're at at that point. Most of the SMPs require you've taken all the pre reqs anyway. Ace them and you'll be off to a good start whatever you choose.

Not to be a cheerleader but your situation is far from hopeless. Were you a science teacher for three years? Adcoms will love that. You have less rooms for error going forward than a lot of people but you absolutely can do this.

Yep, I taught High School Physics and Bio overseas for the last 3 years. I really appreciate the positivity. I know that I have no room for error moving forward, but I'm also a different person now than I was during my undergrad. I also know that now I need to demonstrate that.
