Based on others' comments saying that DMD's don't do any dental surgeries, I was just wondering if they can't do surgeries what do they do?

{Only a DDS is licensed to perform surgery, but only a DMD can write prescriptions.

But remember that only DMD can do histories & physicals and assess surgical plannings. Sure DMDs don't operate or pick up handpieces, but we're the master minds behind the entire treatment. DDS can only operate or use handpieces after an authorization signature from a DMD.}

By the way a DDS CAN write prescriptions.

seriously, you are staring dental school this year and yet you believe that comment?

Its true.

DDS do surgeries.. but can NOT write prescriptions..

My dentist (DDS) wrote me a prescription for amoxicillin and the pharmacy rejected it.

However, when my other dentist (DMD) wrote one, they accepted it within 4 minutes.

My suggestion, get your DDS, since it would be more profitable to do procedures rather than write prescriptions..

just my humble opinion.

where do you people come up with this crap? (can i say crap on sdn? i hope i can say crap on sdn because i just said crap) people should really not talk out of their a$$ w/o knowing the facts.

Me too! I get a great kick out of them. Silly us.

my fault, its hard to read the sarcasam in these posts. but man people can be harsh, if its a waste of time dont say anything.

From ADA.org:

DDS/DMD

DDS — doctor of dental surgery
DMD — doctor of dental medicine

Indicates the degree awarded upon graduation from dental school to become a general dentist. There is no difference between the two degrees; dentists who have a DMD or DDS have the same education. Universities have the prerogative to determine what degree is awarded. Both degrees use the same curriculum requirements set by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. Generally, three or more years of undergraduate education plus four years of dental school is required to graduate and become a general dentist. State licensing boards accept either degree as equivalent, and both degrees allow licensed individuals to practice the same scope of general dentistry. Additional post-graduate training is required to become a dental specialist, such as an orthodontist, periodontist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

It is best if you get your DMD because if you want to specialize in OMF then you won't have to do the two years of med school because you all ready have the MD part of the degree.

Yeah, I also heard that when you get your DMD diploma it automatically comes with a truck drivers license. I find that particularly attractive because I love an 18 wheeler. Honk!!! Honk!!!

I knew what this thread was going to be when I clicked, but I still lol'ed reading it.

Did you hear of that one guy who recently graduated with dual DDS/DMD degrees? He must be set!

I hear the ladies prefer DDS degrees. That's how I chose the school I'm going to.

Oh yeah, smart guy!? Then how do you explain THIS:

DDS — doctor of dental surgery
DMD — doctor of dental medicine

I love this: we were in pedo class and we were unresponsive. The prof, frustrated, says "what degree are you guys getting?" The class in unison says "DMD." Then he says, "What does that stand for?" The class in unison says "doctor of medical dentistry!" 😛 I just laughed and the people around me were like YES IT IS! I just said go look it up and get back to me 😀 That's a pretty damn expensive degree to not know what it is.

Dentariae Medicinae Doctor (Doctor of Dental Medicine)...its in latin

i went for the DDS because someone i was told it stands for Don't Do ****. the DMD seemed like too much work with all those prescriptions and histories and physicals. those DMDs must be smart.

i didnt have to read the whole post to know you are a freshman. the title of the thread gave it away. dont worry though, lots of newcomers ask the same question.

This thread is awsome!!! I had very difficult time deciding between Tufts (DMD) and NYU (DDS), but after reading your post I decided to attend NYU! See you in August!

Very True!!!! You are so smart!! You must be a DMD!!!!

So as far as the additional time needed to get a specialization in Oral Surgery, is it true that it is only 2yrs. for DMD and 4 for DDS or is that a bunch of bull too?

Yes. DMD = DDS

Curious, why do they differenciate and give out DDS and DMDs, why not just have one degree of dentistry. To be honest I thought DDS=DMD and never thought different until reading around this thread, is there really a difference and if so what exactly is it. Is it the same like MD/DO difference where it is just letters that make the difference or does it affect someone's practice and scope of procedures?

Makes no difference at all.

Do a search of the dental forums and you'll come up with piles of threads with more information.

This may shed some light: http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/programs/information.asp#ddsdmd

You would be surprised some of the things you hear. The Dentist that I shadowed spent all this time explaining that a DMD degree had extra internal medicine classes (and he was totally serious). So while we know they are equivalent, there are dentists out there that might actually believe some of these things posted in these threads.

You should tell him that he is completely wrong and advised him to read the ADA website. DP

I'm really surprised that they even let DDS guys give anesthesia. I wouldn't go to one........their treatments are borderline malpractice. If you have a pulse and blood and a brain, go to a DMD. I implore you, don't send your kids to DDS. They don't actually do any dentistry on humans in dental school, it is all on dogs and cats. Half of them are illiterate hobos. 😱 Don't even get me started on the Toofache. He isn't too bad for a DDS. Doesn't steal as much as you would expect for one of his hygiene.

I think you are right. You see in the old days, dentists were like barbers or butchers. These "docs" operated next to the gutter alley where they washed their bloody instruments in the filthly water where all kinds of disease started from. It is not uncommon for the gutter rats to lick on the instruments to get a taste of human blood (there's one less instrument to wash...). Years later, dentistry were seen more of a medical speciality so DMD title was incorporated. The Doctor of Dental Medicine sounded much more medically oriented than the DDS where this title was associated with streetside butchers or tooth fixers. Well, some diehard dentists did not want to change to DMD name because they do not want to let go of the past so some schools still use the DDS degree. It is not suprising that DDS schools still retain the ancient, dinassour type of philosophy where the practice of dentistry is to pull, yank, rip, chop, mop, wack, push, pull, shot, shock, pry gouge, instead of relying on medically sound practice and principles. Some DDS schools offer holistic intervention to boot. I have a DDS and now I am ashame of it as nobody takes me seriously. I thought about going to school to get the DMD but I know that I would only waste money as no school would ever consider a guy like me with a DDS. I never thought my inferiority complex would hit this low. My advice to all dentist wanna be is DO NOT, again DO NOT enter schools that offer the DDS unless you want turn yourself into a morbid, sadistic mentally challenged individual that nodoubt will have your life profiled on Crime Library. com. Please again, DO NOT go to DDS school. DP

Just for the record....I only steal those little syrup jars from Denny's when I get the shakes. There's nothing like a maple shot at 2am.....

See, with your hygiene I figured you would be taking the salt shakers too. Maybe copping a feel on Bertha the waitress...... 😍
