Can anyone ( DMU students or otherwise)clarify this for me?
On the CIB it states that DMU doesnt require Biochemistry, only recommends it.
http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/2011cib/2011cib-whole.pdf
(page 39)

While on DMU's website in their viewbook it states that it is a requirement.
http://www.dmu.edu/com/do/downloads/DOviewbook09.pdf
(page 10)

I am more likely to believe that DMU would have the most accurate information, but i just wanted to clafiry. Was this not always the case maybe?
Thanks!

edit: or perhaps is it just saying that 3 hours of biochemistry can be accepted instead of Organic II?

For DMU, 3 hrs of biochemistry can be substituted for o-chem II (they are not one of the schools that requires biochem). I know someone that recently got accepted and definitely has not taken biochem.

Ah, after re-reading it and looking at the hour requirements on their organic chemistry, this is what i figured was the case.

Thanks

Funny, on the new CIB it says DMU does require Biochem (pg 41). I wonder if they are trying to move towards requiring it

i talked to admissions at DMU last week about biochem (to try to increase my chances) and i made a comment about how i need to take orgo 1 and 2 because i can't take biochem without orgo 2 and she kind of chuckled and said yeah. So that tells me that orgo 2 will not be substituted for biochem. she also made is somewhat clear that biochem is definitely wanted.

I'm taking biochem not only to increase my chances at schools like DMU (whether highly recomended or not) and Western, but also because it seems like most med students agree it is probably the most useful UG class you can take (learned this from 2+ years purusing SDN).

I think I'll email DMU admissions, I'll post the response when I get it.

Agreed, biochem sorta tied everything together for me. I'm taking my MCAT this friday and after studying a good month straight for it I can definitely say my background in biochem (b.s. in it) is what helped me the most. If not for anything else, take a class or two in it to give you a good introduction to body mechanisms that I'm sure will come in handy for med school..

I'm a first year at DMU. Last year biochem was required. It might have changed this year, but I seriously doubt it. You can be accepted without having biochem, but you need to complete 3 hours of biochem before you matriculate.

I agree with Mega ... I think biochem helped quite a bit on the MCAT. I had a few discrete questions there were straight up biochem, and I knew them from taking biochem + lab

Here's the update:

Good afternoon xxxx,

Thank you for your email and interest in DMU. We do require three semester hours of biochemistry as a pre-requisite course. We encourage students to take a lab as well if it is available. This course does not have to be completed prior to application, but is required by the time of matriculation.

I apologize for any miscommunication; we started requiring biochemistry as a pre-requisite course for the 2009 entering class. Our website (http://www.dmu.edu/com/do/requirements/) has the most current information about requirements and our application process.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions.

So it looks like it is a pre-req, though I think I will be passing on the Biochem lab (can't flipping stand UG labs).

Sorry for the misinfo. My friend got in 2008; apparently times change. It's good to know that it's now required (though they aren't my radar and I took biochem).

Also, not all schools require two semester of organic chem to take biochem. My undergrad allowed you to take biochem with only one semester of organic.

Thanks for the update, good to know
