DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think Touro-NV is the only DO school that refunds most of the deposit - but that's because of NV law.

I think a lot of MD schools require a deposit sooner (my state school for one only gave a few weeks), but the deposits are MUCH smaller - only $100-200 usually. May 15th is the day a student can hold only 1 acceptance, even if they paid multiple deposits they'd have to withdraw from all but 1.

DMU was $1000, but was divided in 2 payments so that was nice.

Hey guys,

Has anyone taken a taxi from their hotel to DMU, and back to their hotel? Are there taxi's available at DMU, or do you have to call for one in advance? Unfortunately I don't think the Hampton has shuttles. 👎

I'm planning on taking a taxi after the interview this Friday. If you are as well, lets split one.

My interview is on 9/29, so I won't be able to. Please let me know how the taxi situation works out for you though. 🙂

Good luck at your interview!

Ohhh, you're interviewing on the 29th? I'm interviewing on the 30th. Good luck!

Thanks!! You too. I'll try to post details after the interview... but my flight is a couple hours after and I'm probably going to return home dead tired after the flight. I'll do my best to give feedback that night though so you have it for the next morning. :luck:

Haha, don't worry about it and get plenty of rest after your flight 🙂

Darn that sucks! I knew so many people who were waitlisted at TX schools and ended up getting in around June. Those lucky *******, just kidding.

Does anyone know why DO schools do this? You think it has to do with them wanting to "capture" as many students possible so they don't get accepted off a waitlist for an MD school and decide to go there instead? I feel like that may have a small part to do with it. I guess it's good strategy, lol.

I guess the ultimate goal is to get as many interviews and acceptances by December, lay out the options in front of you, and pick from there.

It has never been explicitly stated, but many say DO schools have non-refundable deposits because applicants tend to apply to them as back-ups in case an MD acceptance doesn't happen. Then the schools go through interviewing (and spending money on) all those applicants that end up ditching the DO acceptance for an MD one. It also forces people to make acceptance decisions faster instead of holding onto multiple ones for months and months.

I'm wondering if I should call the school.
I completed my secondary app on Aug 5th and still have heard nothing. The kicker is that I have pretty competitive stats for the school and was expecting a fast track interview..
It seems like regular interview invites come in 2-3 weeks after, and I'm beyond that now.

Anyone else in the same boat?

If you never got an e-mail saying you were complete, I would call or e-mail. It never hurts and it shows that you are interested in the school. The admissions department is very nice and is always willing to assist.

oh in that case id just keep waiting...in a few weeks if u still have nothing maybe send a letter of interest....make sure they know u r interested in DO cuz they might see ur stats and think u might be using them as a fallback if MD doesnt pan out but thats my opinion...

+1 and try to be patient.. all good doctors have plenty of patients.

haha good pun! I'm not too impatient, I'm just a bit worried that something might have happened to my app. I guess that'd be super rare though..

Edit.. think I was reading a different school discussion when I read the 2-3 weeks. Seems normal that DMU gets back a little later. Sorry 😀

it seems like DMU sends all invites out in spurts. If you happen to be complete right after a spurt, it might seem a lot longer than if you were complete shortly before it.

fye (for your entertainment): It took me one month from completion e-mail to receive II.

Does anyone want to share a ride with me to the interview so we can save cost? I am interviewing on Sept 2.

Shacked up in the hotel for the night. Interview tomorrow!

Right there with ya Redchief. We'll see you in the morning.

Looks like the last big spurt of interview invites went out first few days of august so here's to hoping the next spurt will be over the next few days 🙂

Just interviewed today and I think I nailed it.

Can someone post more info about the interview day?
Also random, but did they give you a portfolio or folder or something to put all the info in? I don't want to bring one if they give you one...

yeah they give you a packet with notepad and paper. I had brought one so I just left mine in the closet at admissions. sorry for short answer but its been a long day, and im on my phone, and im going to sleep now. if i think of more to saym ill post in the morning.

The interview day starts at 8:30. You sit around and chat with fellow interviewees, then admissions talks to you and then financial aid talks to you. Everyone was very light-hearted and jovial. The financial aid talk was quick, which was nice because other schools, their talks can be quite long and boring, especially when you've already research financial aid options on your own, and every school retells you the same thing.

Then you tour the labs, talk about the school, and get an OMM demonstration - all of which was awesome. Then it's lunch and you sit with some M2's and get to talk some more about the school. After lunch, it's the interviews and a campus tour, not necessarily in that order depending on your interview time. My interview was first, so it was a little hard to focus on the tour since I couldn't stop thinking about better answers I could have given in the interview.

As for the interview - it was laid back, conversational, which is pretty much how every school I've read about describes their interviews. There were two professors and two students. One student asked questions and the other student just sat in the back and observed. They did, however, grill me pretty much the whole time. In undergrad, I went through a phase where I got a lot of C's and D's and pretty much the whole interview centered around that. So whatever your biggest flaw is, expect them to ask you about it 10 times with different wording.

I stayed positive and felt like I had really good answers. After about every answer one of them gave me a little positive encouragement with just a little ""good answer", or "good, good" then segueing in to the next question. One of the professors also told me he really likes non-trads, which is good because I'm a non-trad, and it turned out that I had a couple interesting things in common with the student interviewer - things that were not on my application, so that was good.

Amen to that. Keeping my fingers crossed!

thanks for the input. were there any ethical questions or any of the "you better know the healthcare bill well" questions? any really tough questions? I have also heard that a couple people may grill you to see how you do under pressure. good luck on the acceptance.

Yeah I've heard that they will grill you to see how you handle the pressure, in which case I think I did great.

They did not ask me any ethical questions, however they did ask me about one of my medical experiences and I worked some ethical-ness into that.

There were no questions about healthcare. Although I did face some tough questions as I only had one professor interview me, while the other 2 were students. The students I have to say asked some strange questions...
How did you handle a situation in which you were doing something illegal?
and the professor tried to make a joke about doing bad in a class entitled "7 Modern Irish poets", yet I received a B+ in the class. Then he asked me to name the 7 poets, which I could not remember the majority of these names. He was trying to be funny, yet they really put the pressure on me with some strange questions. Everyone says how it is supposed to be a low stress environment in the interview room, but I felt as if I were attacked.

I remember one guy on Thursday saying he had a rough interview and seemed pretty distraught. From what you just said, that doesn't sound like you were being attack but it does sound confusing. I remember a scholarship interview in undergrad where I had a student interviewer that kept asking off-the-wall questions. They were trying to sound really deep and probing, but I thought they were just rediculous. But still, you have to take such things in stride. They may have been purposely trying to confuse you to see how you would handle it.

My very first med school interview was kinda like that. I thought it was going great, and then they said some things that just didn't make any sense to me, like they were purposely misunderstanding what I was saying. It really threw me off and I stumbled through the rest of the interview. Looking back though I was convinced that they were purposely trying to confuse me to see how I would handle it and my mentor agreed that that was very likely their tactic.

What? how did you answer. Or what would be an acceptable answer? Damn.

Did you end up getting accepted at this school?

I'm getting a little worried about the interview now! AHH! This is my top OOS choice.

Nope. That was last year. I do have an interview invite at that school again this year though. I was able to call the Assistant Dean of Admissions and get feedback on what the adcom said about me. The problems they had with accepting me were because of the questions that I had already suspected I answered poorly. And I knew I answered poorly because I lost my cool at one point and didn't recover. My interview at DMU went much better only because of my experience in interviews last year. Of course, I don't know if I'm accepted to DMU, so maybe I'm still not doing good enough, however I have heard that if you are getting a lot of interviews but not accepted, then you need to work on your interview skills and not your paper-stats.

What? how did you answer. Or what would be an acceptable answer? Damn.

Oh yeah, I meant to mention, too, that the answer to question seems to me it would be an easy answer: "I've never done anything illegal, and I would almost certainly report anyone who was doing something illegal."

yeah but that is an obvious load of pig crap. you cant go through high school and college without EVER doing something illegal. i am sure that is how you should answer, but they should be able to look right through that.

i would talk about speeding...since its something that is very minor, but still illegal...where you didn't notice ur speed...respected the police and now abide by the speed limit. I mean like u said nobody goes through life without doing something illegal...i mean how many people haven't downloaded a movie, show or music illegally before...and everyone has sped whether they were caught or not is irrelevant

You can download movies and music?! I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what you are talking about :meanie:

Haha, now that's the biggest lie ever!

How long does it take for DMU to give out acceptances after the interview? 2-3 weeks?

Also, when is the initial deposit due? Is it a month after acceptance or do we have December to decide?

hey my mom barely even knows how to text! im sure the concept of illegally downloading movies and music would seem strange and impossible to her 😛

three weeks for acceptance/rejection notices is what the admissions committee told us at the interview day.

Interviewed today. It seemed to go just fine, but it's hard to tell when everybody is so nice. 2-3 weeks to wait for an email...

Congrats! Was the interview as "grilling" as people say it was? Do you mind posting about any particular questions they asked?

Honestly, I felt like I was grilled 🙁
I had 4 interviewers (2 faculty, 2 students)
I have no idea if they liked me or not...I hope so.
Most of the "grilling" was in response to the answers I gave, and also things on my primary app. I felt like my answers weren't bad my any means, but they would kind of "challenge" my answers to make it in a negative light so I would have to defend myself.

Wow, it seems like those of you who interviewed were somewhat grilled, which is odd because I don't remember much of that last year when I interviewed through talking to interviewees afterwards. My personal interview was pretty conversational and I wasn't thrown any tough questions and both the docs ended by saying that they hope I'll consider DMU for the fall...which I thought was so odd I didn't know what to say lol.
