Hey guys, I'm a sophmore Biology Major at Elmira College in upstate NY. It's a very small school (1200) kids and we have 4 Bio and 3 chem teachers(1 chem teacher does physics too)! This makes up the entire science department but the classes are so damn small which is awesome 🙂 Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew any info or applied to the Des Moines University COM early acceptance program??? Basically, it says your guaranteed an acceptance spot if you get it and you keep over a 3.5 GPA and get at least a 25 on the MCAT. You can apply in ur sophmore or junior year. It is NON-BINDING which is also nice! I have NO IDEA how difficult it is to get. I heard it was a very good school and the construction of a multi-million dollar Student center/building sounds promising. It says you need 4 LOR, one of which must be from a clinician, do you think my regular doctor (MD) would be okay? He knew me all of my life so I think it would be much better than a DO I just met. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks, Bryan

Bump...Anyone have any ideas/comments about this program?????

I am a fourth year at DMU and did the early acceptance program back when I was a sophomore in college, I did it when it was a new program. I think the rules have changed a bit, being that I think they now require you to go back and get an undergrad degree somehow. I was never required to get one. It is nonbinding as far as I know, but if you do get in and decide to attend following jr. year you are put into the class just like everyone else. I would advise getting a letter from a DO though. I dont know how many people apply each year for this program, but if I remember correct from when I interviewed there was about 10 or so. The interview from what I gather after talking to others once I was in, is a bit differnt. Be prepared to have answers as to why you want to be a DO, but more so know why you want to attend early and possibly lose your shot at becoming an MD. DO schools are big on weeding out the "wannabe MD's" I have never regretted my decision and will be graduating in May. DMU is a great school and there is major construction going on which will make the campus look more modern. Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions. Good luck

I am currently a 2nd year, and I got in on early acceptance....so basically I got accepted as a freshman in college. I had to meet their requirements, and then my first year of med school just transfered back to my undergrad as "higher level" science credits. So I graduated in May of 2004 and finished my first year of med school at the same time. They pretty much took care of everything for me and both schools worked back and forth together to get everything squared away, so I can't answer too many questions. However feel free to pm me if you have specific questions, if not just get hold of admissions, they'll walk you through everything!!!

They also usually want you to shadow a DO at some point as part of your prereq's, but I think if you get any letter of recommendation from a physician who has known you for a long time it is better than getting one from someone just because they are a DO. Don't get me wrong a DO one would help, but the letters are so the interviewers can get character references so they usually want it from someone who actually knows you. Good luck and again pm me or the 4th year cause I'm sure we basically have the same answers!
