Hello,

I am grateful to have two osteopathic acceptances. NYIT-COM Old Westbury Campus (Long Island, NY) and Des Moines University COM (Des Moines, Iowa).

NYIT-COM is closer to my family (a few hours drive). I enjoy the proximity of being close to NYC, but I do not like Long Island. I have done research in NYC and I thought that having/sustaining this connection may be a potential benefit of going to NYIT-COM. But that could be a moot point. I also think there is a potential to continue doing research in some capacity with the organization (writing portions of papers relating to projects I have worked on etc.) in Iowa, but there is a definite benefit to being able to show up on-site and be more involved.

DMU-COM is a foreign world for me, but not one I am opposed to. I do not know the mid-west and have never lived in a quiet, more rural environment. As school will be so busy, it may offer more nature/calm that may be nice. I have been impressed with the school's communication and how they have presented themselves. That said, my experience with them has been virtual.

Of particular importance to me a supportive academic environment. I know med school is hard and I do worry about NYIT-COMs class size (about 300) versus DMU's (220 or so). NYIT-COM is about 5k more year in tuition, and 10k more in projected living expenses.

I am not set on a NY or East Coast match necessarily, but there is a good chance I will end up here.

Would love to hear thoughts or opinions from others about either of these schools, particularly if you had to make a similar choice or selected one of these schools.

Thank you!

@Goro I would love to hear your opinion of the stronger choice of the two, if you have time 🙂
What do you like more, casseroles or NY pizza/deli food????

Seriously, calls size is largely irrelevant unless it impacts how many students/cadaver. Most students don't go to lecture, after all.

NYITCOM has better access to research institutions in the NYC area.

I met a DO at my local hospital who was a DMU grad. She was from CA, and didn't attend the two CA COMs because she wanted to get out of CA for a time and try something new. It must have stuck because she never went back to CA!

Who has cheaper tuition??? COA in Des Moines will obviously be cheaper than that on Long Island.

Thanks Goro, that is a great point about class size. Appreciate your feedback.

Current 3rd year at DMU here. Not to take away from the importance of choosing based on pizza selection, but there's definitely some things I wish I understood before choosing schools. Rotation selection, mentorship opportunities, administration, etc. Things I can't advocate for and that become imperative down the stretch. PM me for more details (open invitation to anyone).

Will PM you thank you so much. I would love to hear more about your experiences with all of those things at DMU.
