DMU new student- Worth it to purchase a tablet?

Hey current students,

I am starting at DMU next year and I had intended on purchasing a new computer until I found out that DMU provides one for you. So now I am wondering if I should take the money I was going to use to buy a new computer and get a tablet. Do you see any value in having both a computer and a tablet, or should I just stick with the computer DMU provides me? Do you prefer one over the other?

The computer DMU provides you is more than enough. I honestly don't think you'll need it. There is one class where the professor will have podcasts available to ipad users but he also made it available online for everyone else as well so it didn't matter. If I were you, I would save the money. Pod school is expensive and the less you borrow the better off you'll be.

I have no comment on the tablet. I will say this - all along the way through school there has always been something else to buy. Fancy equipment. More books. This or that gadget. I don't think anything has really changed my life or performance. I caved and bought the Welch Allyn crap. Wasn't needed. Could have pretended my way through SPALs without it. I stood firm and didn't buy an expensive stethescope. Haven't used mine for anything but blood pressure since 1st year SPALs (maybe there's a case for a nice one...in 4th year?). I suppose my SWM is nice, but apparently there's a nicer one out there still that reps give out at conferences. If you really want it, get it. But say no to most of the "musts" you encounter in school. Since this rant is on a roll I'd like to point out that Mann's surgery book is currently $95 cheaper than McGlamry's (which is another big "must have" unnecessary expenditure that many will make in the bookshelf decoration department).

I agree with everything except McGlamry's textbook being unnecessary. I liked having the foot and ankle surgery bible available to study up for cases. Some people say the history portion of the chapters is superfluous and makes reading it a drag; I disagree, as a lot of attendings pimp students on the history of procedures. Not saying I think that knowledge is important, but nailing one of those questions might land you a program.

What model is the computer that DMU gives out. From my interview I recall a Toshiba being used, but what is the specific model

Every class is different. I got a HP Elitebook and I think that's what the second year got last year too.
