Hi All-

I thought I'd post these stats I got from DMU in an e-mail. Hope this helps:

The DPM class of 2013 started August 11, 2009.

  • 57 students (65% male, 35% female)

  • Average age is 25

  • Average overall GPA is 3.35

  • Average science GPA is 3.25

  • Average MCAT is 23

  • Students from 24 states are represented

wow. surprised at MCAT, it was 25 the year before.

Most of the schools are pretty equal when it comes to admission averages. There is some fluctuation from year to year but in the end, we are all about the same.

o boy congrats. And arizona is 100% they must be the big cheese huh?

Norm, it's important when comparing board pass rates to compare apples to apples. DMU clearly states that their "first time" pass rate is 98.3%. While AZPOD is a great school, they don't advertise their first time pass rate, just their overall pass rate. It very well could be that their first time rate is ~100%...but we can't say for sure.

Thanks IAPOD, also to note that AZPOD's class is only 40 students where DMU's was 60. If you take those two school's out think how low the national average is then?

some advice to you pre-pods who knock iowa:

all you will do is study. cost of living is cheap, and des moines has all the basics and necessities. you are going to go further in debt than you already are. instead of living in NYC or LA paying 1100 for place you are never at, pay 500 in iowa for place you are never at. groceries? they are grown around the corner and are cheap.
why pay for something you are never going to have the chance to use?

Answer to your question: I hope not all you do is study! There is so much you can do and volunteer for outside of studying (which helps make you well-rounded). I am recovering from our double-header flag football game from the other night. These South Florida guys are fast, but the much wiser 2nd year podiatry team killed them. Personal/non-study time is key to surviving a rigorous medical program.
Food is free for me because I have kids and qualify for food stamps. I pay for our apartment for my wife and kids to be at, which they are hardly at because they are outside, yearound, either at the beach, park, zoos. I like the warm weather where they can be outside and not be couped up inside. I enjoy my free time and there is a ton to do in Miami. The same would be true for San Fran or LA. Go to a school where you (and your spouse if you have one) will be happy and be able to enjoy your 4 years. Some people can't handle big cities and can't focus on their studies, avoid big cities.

Just in case people don't know the Des Moines metro area is around 450,000 people so we are not small by any means and have a lot to offer. Second I just got done playing in a flag football tourney as well. Third, since this is a DMU Stats forum page, what was Barry's first time pass rate in 2009? They don't have it posted anywhere on their website, or even a class profile.

I don't want to argue who's city is cooler. Does iowa have their own special Podiatry books that the rest of us don't have. It is the Student taking the board exam not the school. I don't know the first time pass rate, it didn't determine where I went to school. You gotta get over that. Those who apply themselves will pass. We are all learning the same material and hopefully will be collegues, partners, and friends in the same field of Podiatry. Quit playing the, "My school is better than yours." You may have more people that passed the first time...congratulations! I am happy for anybody that passes the boards, it is a tough exam. I didn't want to take over the thread at all, just giving some opinions. I will leave now.

No DMU is not equal. First Time Pass Rate for the Class of 2011 was 98.3%.

The OP was actually discussing admission standards so in fact, DMU is pretty much equal/ average. Their numbers speak for themselves, as they were posted. No one was discussing board pass rates, but rather admission standards. And the truth is, most of the schools are all about the same in that regard (admission standards).

As for the board pass rates, another poster hit the nail on the head. Its the student who takes the boards, not the school. If you look at the statistics, there is not a statistically significant difference in the scores. I know some schools don't allow all their students to take the boards in July, therefore boosting their "first time" pass rate. I am not suggesting DMU does this, I am simply saying there are schools who do.

i didnt mean for this to turn into the "my school is better than yours" thing. i have repeatedly said in the past that each person should go with the school that fits them. I should have done a better job telling pre-pods to get over the whole "its iowa" thing.
