Trying to decide between the two. If anyone was in a similar situation, or has an input about the two schools....please help. On one hand I really like KCUMB's curriculum, but felt more "comfortable" at DMU. I heard DMU is trying to keep 3rd year rotations within Iowa. I would like to go to Ohio, any current DMU students see this as a possibility or would I most likely be in Iowa?

Help.

I know KCUMB will give you great opportunities to do your rotations in Ohio.

Here are the affiliated sites for KCUMB:

Personally, I'm still torn b/w KCOM and KCUMB.

I didn't take any pictures when I visited KCUMB. Does anyone have any pictures of the city, campus or the PLAZA (since I didn't have time to visit there)? Please post or PM me any images. Much appreciation!

I didn't take any pictures, but you should visit www.visitKC.com and check out the website. KC is a great place to live, in my opinion. From that website, here are some pictures of the city and of the plaza.

They are trying to get all the rotation spots in Iowa but it won't happen for a long time. We have too many top notch rotation spots in Ohio as well as Michigan and I highly doubt DMU will ever loose those spots without having something of equal quality to back it up. You will have the option to go almost anywhere you want and unlike other schools, you will have the opportunity to choose where you go. Good luck and PM me if you have any questions with your decision. 👍

It's my understanding that Ohio will be kept for a 3rd year site no matter what.

I'm currently an MSIV @ KCUMB, I have no input about DMU. I would put my 1st 2 years of school against anywhere in the country, DO or MD. Our curriculum is wonderful and so is the teaching, for the most part. No matter where you end up, choose your site of 3rd year rotations wisely as it may effect your education.

PM me if you have any more ?s.

Anyone currently deciding between these two and want to share something 🙂

I'm currently a 4th year at DMU. I applied to Kirksville, Kansas city and chicago as well. If anyone has any questions about why I chose DMU over those schools feel free to PM me. Also I did my 3rd year at an Ohio site and I know that right now they are NOT planning on getting rid of the Ohio sites and infact they actually signed on so that students can now stay during their 4 year if they are interested. 🙂

do you mind posting why you chose DMU over KCUMB or CCOM? I'm sure many of us here have the same questions.

I'm a 4th year at DMU as well. I was accepted at both, but chose DMU on feel. I did not like Kansas City, and didn't like the area of the school. (I wasn't fond of Kirksville either, though for different reasons). I also had a wife and child to consider, and Des Moines is safer. I would absolutely make the same choice again.

As for rotations, I have stayed in Columbus for both 3rd and 4th year. The Ohio Core will remain an option for the people who choose it. Just this year it was approved for 4th years to stay on as a part of the Core. Staying in place for 2 years was awesome.

As for all the Iowa talk, DMU has just been trying to create more spots in Iowa for those that want to stay. No one is saying you have to remain there.

Good Luck!

I chose DMU based on the feeling I got when I interviewed. All of the students seemed very happy, close and were very friendly even thought hey had just taken a test that morning. I really liked the way the first 2 years were set up at DMU. The first year is basic science and the second year was systems based. So you learned everything that you needed to know but it was repeated so that if you missed it the first time, you had another chance. I also liked that DMU had frequent tests that were staggered instead of having a specific test week where you take 5 tests in 1 week. i also felt that the faculty was awesome at des moines, and would always be there to help if i would have needed it. Finally, I know that Des Moines has a really well known name and their students go all over the US and into all different specialties.

As far as Kansas city, I liked the school and I liked the people, but I didn't like the area that the school was in. There were students that lived 2-3 blocks from school but still drove because it's just not safe. I also felt like the school was run a little too much like a business. I just didn't get the feeling that if I needed help that I would get the same kind of help that I would at des moines.

At CCOM, I loved the campus and the location. The tution was 10K more then des moines plus the difference in the cost of living for 4 years. Also I didn't get a good feeling at all during my interview day. On the day that I interviewed none of the students seemed happy. Also it seemed like most of the students stayed in chicago for residency, and I wanted a school that had students going all over.

Kirksville, was a great school but in a really small city. I just didn't want to be in kirksville. Plus the feel wasn't there.

So basically when it came down to it, I felt like I would do the best at Des Moines. I knew that I would have friends and that I would fit in well, which would make it easier for me to do well in my classes. I would say that going with your gut feeling is pretty important. Most schools will offer the same things academically, just look at where you think you can enjoy yourself when you have a free moment.

feel free to ask any other questions if you have any

Here are my thoughts on DMU vs. KCUMB. I interviewed at both schools, and have been accepted by both, and I am in the process of deciding as well. Pros for KCUMB seem to be the curriculum, which I think is great. I makes a lot more sense to study entire body sytems at once, rather than trying to assimilate peices of knowledge from several courses in order to get the big picture. KCUMB also offers the dual DO/MBA degree, which is aimed at helping one learn how to set up a practice and manage the business side of medicine, which is becoming increasingly complex. Downsides to this school are the location in KC -- bad neighborhood.

DMU on the other hand, is in better surroundings and also has newer facilities. There is a 10-story clinic on campus, which is nice. Also, they have a really impressive surgery lab. Technology is really cutting edge here -- the laptop and PDA they give you would be very useful. The IT department also maintains/upgrades your PDAs and laptops for you! DMU doesnt offer an MBA program, but they do have masters of healthcare admin and masters of public health programs. Class size is smaller at DMU as well -- 215 compared to around 250 at KCUMB. The gym at DMU is incredible! Indoor track, workout bikes, free weights, basketball court. I'm somewhat of a fitness fanatic, and I was impressed to learn that they do a full fitness assesment of all incoming freshmen at DMU. This includes bone density test, lipid profile, stretch tests and strength tests. They are really health-conscious at this school. Anyway, Im definately leaning toward DMU at this point.

Nice post Jenny -- I too "felt" comfortable at DMU. Being able to fit in with the class is important to me as well, and I totally agree with you.

I did the MHA at DMU and I think it is more applicable to the profession I am going into than the MBA. We had two courses of health care finance, if that is what you are worried you wouldn't get. Plus they do alot of stuff with HR, admin, MCOs, etc. that is more applicable to the field, especially if you want to be CMO of chief of staff or go into private practice, etc. You get the business side but also the managerial side that I think physicians need to learn. Plus I did most of it in the first two years (Which I know people that did a DO/MHA/MPH in the four years alotted by spending summertime doing the masters stuff). Definately doable.

About KCUMB..

In addition to the positive comments mentioned earlier the school is always improving. Currently they are building a brand new library and fitness center that will include an indoor running track. This building will also house the new auditorium/lecture hall 1500 seats.

KCUMB just finished building a new clinical skills lab which is amazing with I think five patient simulators.

It is correct to say that KCUMB is located in the urban area of town and sure there are questionable areas near the school but I have never had any trouble. Campus is open late at night and I have walked to my car without fear and with no problems. There are great areas to run right from the school - great scenic drive called Cliff Drive. The downtown area continues to grow and improve and KCUMB has a great view of the City. Students walk and live near the school in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Listen to this lady, she knows her stuff! KC was a great town to be in the 1st 2 years of school; my wife and I loved it. Moreover, you know your stuff when you leave (esp. pathology - we've got the pathguy, www.pathguy.com).

I go to DMU my S/O goes to KCUMB... she says that she wishes she had chosen DMU. She said that KCUMB can be overly paternalistic toward their students and taking tests in blocks sucked. Either school will help you reach your goals, wether you succeed or not is entirely up to you. If I were you I'd pick the school that felt right to you. Do a search this toppic has been rehashed over and over.

I also felt like the school was run a little too much like a business. I just didn't get the feeling that if I needed help that I would get the same kind of help that I would at des moines.

I can debunk this myth. I graduated from KC last year and during my 4th year they pulled out a lot of stops to help me. And I'm talking about the folks high up in the admin. It's a great school, I had a great time in KC and made some of the best friends of my life. Did rotations and now doing my choice residency in Ohio. 👍 🙂

What do you mean by overly paternalistic? And liking/not liking block exams is something you should be aware of before you start/decide to attend KCUMB.

1) Do a search...but I'll give you an example. A student from KCUMB was here on SDN discussing some things that he thought were negative actions taken by the school and he was called in to the Deans office and threatend with expusion if he did'nt stop posting negative comments about the school on SDN.

2)I think it would be very hard for any one not going through medical school to accurately judge wether or not you like block exams during medical school. She did'nt think she would mind it before she started medschool.

Cliff drive is great - i ran there a couple of weeks ago - I guess I should say mid December. It is awesome. No I don't think I would run on any scenic drive or trail in the country by myself - Cliff drive is isolated so I am always with a running partner.

Downtown makes for some great running too and you can run down to the park that runs right along the river - all very safe and many people.

I would like to make a couple of comments
1st KCUMB is a great place to learn and grow as I am sure DMU is and I agree with the early comment - "Go where you feel most comfortable". Medical school is a huge journey - I promise that if you put everything you have into the next four years you will do well. NO MATTER if it is DMU or KCUMB. I am sure each school has different pros and cons but I have no doubt they will both get you where you want to go.

I do agree with Sexpanther's early comment about KCUMB's education (I do think this person is somewhat of a freak for having this as there signon 😛 )

My other comment about the paternal stuff - The school (KCUMB) is very big on "Professionalism" (I really don't even like to say it because it is used so much). However, they just enforce the rules and expect alot from their students - as they should. I would say that 98% of the class will never have a problem. KCUMB just expects that you treat the administration, professors and your classmates with respect. I am sure this is expected at most or all schools - KCUMB is just very serious about it.

You should always agree with me apass, and yes I am a bit of a freak, a sexy freak though!👍
