Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you guys could give me some input on these two schools. I'm having a tough time deciding between the two. At NSU, can you do your rotations all across the country like you can at Des Moines?? any input would be appreciated, thanks.

:😛

Hey HoodyHoo,

Congrats on DMU and NSUCOM. On the NSUCOM rotations, you mainly do your rotations at the hospital you get and it's surrounding region/clinical affiliations. There are some hospitals that allow you to do your core rotations outside the region. As for DMU, they send you all over the place since there are not enough spots in Des Moines. Most people I talked to at DMU go to Ohio U's CORE Rotation for their rotations. As for myself, I thought this was a great idea. YOu can basically use rotations as a mode for traveling and seeing the country. Best of luck.

DoctorDoogie4,
thanks for the input. I guess I really want to be able to explore the country during my rotation years since I have been stuck in Iowa my whole life. How hard is it to get rotations that allow you to leave the region at NSUCOM? I ask because I've heard at NSUCOM they really want you to be a part of the Florida community when you are done. Thanks much, I may be leaning a bit more towards NSU now but who knows, I'm just glad I have a choice. thanks again.

I talked quite a bit with the NSU folks about this (accepted there for c/o 2008). They pretty much told me that you need to do your clinicals at one of their dozen sites. However, there are several months of ELECTIVEs you can take anywhere in the country. You just have to get approval for it, which I understand is a pretty easy process.

I know how much I loved NSU. The area, closeness of the beach, new technology, good feeling there. Just go whereever your gut tells you is right. Maybe re-visit again?

There's no pressure to "be part of the FL community." Many of my fellow colleagues left the state for residency training. Last I heard, NSUCOM was setting up rotation sites in GA and Alabama. You are more than welcome to use your elective time to go anywhere you want. If you are into travelling, a good time to do that is during your interviews for residency, I travelled all over the eastern hafl of the US seeing 10+ different cities (lots of fun). Like drlexygoat says, just go where your gut tells you to go (and where you wouldnt' mind spending 4 years!)

Q, DO

Thanks for all the input everyone. i guess i'll just have to visit both schools again and see😕

As a second year who just handed in my rank list for third year rotations, I'm pretty well informed on this topic. There are 12 core sites right now where you will do all of your "core roatations" FP, IM, OBGYN, Surg, Psych, EM, etc etc. For that period you are at that hospital and all of its affiliates. The hospitals NSUCOM affiliates with offer something for all tastes. If you want to do your rotations at a small community hospital with FP residencies etc. there are a few choices. There are also very large teriary care facilities/ level 1 trauma centers that you can spend your third year at. At Memorial Regional, one of these larger hospitals, you do your 2 months of surgery as a member of the trauma team. In Tampa NSU has direct affiliation with Suncoast hospital, the largest osteopathic teaching hospital in the southeast, but Quinn can talk to you about it. If you want to live on miami beach a few miles north of south beach you can do your rotations at either Miami Heart or Mt. Sinai. Again, during your 3rd year you will not travel much, but speaking from my personal experience, I don't really want to leave this area.

During your 4th year, you have 2 months of an assigned rural rotation somewhere in florida. Where I was bumming about this upon hearing about it last year, after hearing about the experiences of several upperclassmen, I am now pretty stoked about an opportunity like that. Since these small clinics are usually understaffed, you have the opportunity to hone your skills being very hands-on. Furthermore, they give you room and board plus a 1500 dollar/month stipend. You then have to do one rural selective. You arrange this yourself, but the school can also help you. This can be anywhere.... people have gone from arizona to work on a Navajo reservation to israel, to india.... After that, you have 5 months of electives you can arrange to do anywhere, most likely hospitals you want to do residencies at, and a vacation month.
I forgot to mention that if you choose to do so, you can do your 3rd year "core"rotations in Georgia through the Osteopathic Institute of the South. I have several classmates from GA that are going to select this route... It's supposed to be very good.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I will find out where I'm going next year at the end of January.
