Hi,

Do 1st and 2nd year electives matter to residency programs? Note: I'm not talking about clinical 3rd/4th year elective rotations. I'm talking about classes like "Intro to Orthopedics" where you shadow Ortho for a set number of weeks, and other courses like that.

Doubtful

Imma go with no.
Maybe only the tiniest bit if you do specialty geared ones and then go into that specialty, so like, demonstrating continued interest. But not in any meaningful way.

Electives seem to be solely for one's own benefit, however those electives could potentially introduce you to people that may be helpful in other aspects (i.e research). Also things like, taking a Spanish elective I would imagine would be glossed over by a PD (who cares?) but speaking fluent Spanish I imagine would be a leg up at programs that serve large Spanish-speaking populations and that elective may have been helpful in that regard.

It's all about whatcha get from it.
