do A&O classes count under BCMP?

Do "Atmospheric and Oceanic Science" count towards the bcmp gpa? I've already looked at the list around SDN and I know "oceanography" is listed as non-bcmp, but there wasn't anything on the list about A&O classes...

you mean i would count as a "geograhy or earth science" course, which is non-bcmp?

Well I'm not sure about that. Oddly enough classes like that are listed in our physics department. Which is odd to say the least...

but its clearly not a physics class. I think if he attempted to declare it as one, it would be correct to --

Natural/Physical Sciences (NPSC)
·Agriculture
·Animal and Avian Sciences
·Forestry
·Geography
·Geology
·Horticulture
·Landscape Architecture
·Meteorology
·Natural Resources
·Oceanography
·Environmental Science & Policy

thanks. yes it is under the "Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences" for my school. so it's non-bcmp (Natural Sciences)? anyone else had a similar class and designed to that?

The content is what matters, not the department it is under. If it is something like an Atmospheric Chemistry class you might be able to get away with labeling it as Chemistry....that being said it probably fits under the Natural/Physical Sciences(Non-BCMP). Look here pg 40 for the list: https://www.aamc.org/students/download/131750/data/2012amcasinstructionmanual.pdf

the title is "AO : Calif. Oceans" and it was just talk about oceans and such. so it's a non-bcmp right?

Yes, definitely non-BCPM.

Edit: I think it counts for science for DO schools, fyi.

i would count it as BCPM. this is a similar case as astronomy.

just make sure you get your app in as early as possible so that if there are corrections to be made by amcas, you can make sure they are. as a reapplicant, i can tell you bcpm courses are somewhat subjective

No, this is not similar to the case of astronomy. This class, from what I gather, is essentially a combination of Meteorology (study of atmosphere) and ocean/marine science (Oceanography), both of which fall under NPSC, a non-BCPM.

whatever dude, i'm speaking as a reapplicant, meaning i've submitted my app to amcas in the past. all they do is change the classification during review if they think it should not be BCPM...not like you get penalized for it.

That being said, i suggest you do it. even if there is a slight argument that its bcpm, there should not be a concern.

finches, you aren't qualified to answer this q.

Regardless, I agree with everyone else on here - my class is clearly non-bcmp. It's NOT under the physics department, it's on its own department. And it's about exactly what finches says - metrology and oceanography--both of which are non-bcmp. I'm not putting it as anything other than that since it was a difficult class anyways. Thanks for the replies everyone!! 🙂

Using this logic, just put all of your classes under BCPM and let them sort out the mess. Just kidding. Use the course subject heading (BIOL, BIOCH, CHEM, PHYS, MATH, STAT, that's about it) as the rule of thumb. The exceptions are few and far between, like a psych class that's all about neurons or maybe something like a biogeography class.

I took a course classified under A&O Sci, listed it on AMCAS, and they counted it as NPSC. So, to answer your question, no.

you get a big X next to it, to indicate you tried to slip something by them.

no...it just indicates the classification changed. who the hell cares?
