I ask this because I had a med. situation that affected (distorted) my GPA at the end of college. Its in my app - letter writers fully aware. I had A's in Bio/Orgo/ect. a 3.7 sci/cum jr year that dropped over .2 points. This included a fail in a seemingly harmless postbac class that I had left. Withdrawing wasnt a priority at the time, but I was unaware of AMCAS policy.

I'm grateful to have had 2 interviews at excellent schools, (35 medcat) though I'm concerned about whether or not committee's actually look at your grades.

Hopefull to hear - thanks.🙂

Yes, they look at your grades. If they didnt, they'd only ask you to report your GPA. There is a reason they make you send in a transcript AND tediously type in every coures you have taken and every grade you have ever received. That being said, if you have extrenuating circumastances, and youve explained it on your application......they will see that too. I wouldnt worry.

They will see any explanation. They will see all reported grades. You might even get asked about the F.

Thanks -

I have thought about sending in something to a few schools to explain the F. I actually retook the course a couple years later (A-), though it was just for my own satisfaction - and had nothing to do with a repeat policy or something.

I dont think thats realy a good idea though. At least at this time.

Yes they do look at your grades. I got asked about a C- that I got in a bio research class, and was glad for the opportunity to explain it cos I had a really good reason. (3 absences in my alma mata = letter grade cut)😱

If you hav a good reason to point it out during your interview, i'd do so and tell them why...so that when the adcom meets to review files, they dont put you down and accept someone else just cos of your F...

OP, what exactly do you mean you were "unaware of AMCAS policy at the time", I recently had 2 audits, and one W about 3 quarters ago, what exactly are the "policies" on these types of things??

thanks

The amcas policy is that post-bac classes are factored into your undergraduate gpa. Withdrawels and audits dont contribute to the gpa. This counted as a post-bac, (0.00) and I unsuccessfully petitioned the school to switch to withdrawel. It was a night class in a foreign language at a school for continuing education.

They definitely notice "trends" or "quirks" in your grades. If you had one bad semester or year, they will most likely ask about it. If your gpa was getting better every semester, they will also notice that. Don't worry too much about it. It is out of your control. Just do the best you can in interviews. Good luck!

They definitely look at individual grades. I have had comments, jokingly asking about my B+ in PChem and them being like, that's PChem we accept any sort of passing grade for that class.
