Is it correct that in order to go into a DO program in a specialty which starts in PGY2 that don't have linked programs(derm, ophtho etc) that the process is to go through the AOA Intern Match your senior year, and then apply to the PGY2 programs during your intern year? Is there no AOA advanced match for these programs as there is in the NRMP? So essentially, it is impossible to apply to both DO and MD programs in these specialties because once you match into an AOA internship, you get booted from the NRMP match, leaving you with only a DO internship!! 😕

If this is the case, wouldn't the best course of action be to go through the NRMP match, listing transitionals at the bottom of your list after the PGY2 programs (advanced match). That way, if you don't match into any MD programs in your specialty, you would wind up in a transitional. Could you then get this transitional approved as an AOA Internship, and apply to both DO and MD programs that year (assuming one doesn't mind getting stuck in a DO program since they match first)? Or, worse comes to worst, changing specialties. I guess the issue would be, is it possible to have an MD Transitional approved by the AOA as an internship? 😕

You are able to apply to both DO and MD residencies (PGY-2) and participate in the DO internship match. You can match into a DO internship and an MD PGY-2 spot as long as the start dates are different. I matched into a 2004 DO internship and an MD residency starting in 2005. As far as unlinked DO PGY-2 spots are concerned, you are correct when you stated that one would first match to a DO internship and then, during the internship year, apply independently to each residency program. It is usually up to the program directors if they would like to link an internship or not (and this may change from year to year). Or if there is more than one position, just link one of them.

So you got permission from your MD res. to accept the DO internship as a PGY1? Is that common?
So you are not automatically bumped from the NRMP completely when you match into a DO internship - just ones that begin at the same date...thanks!

Here's the deal - I want to apply Derm. As a DO, obviously my chances are much greater for DO programs. I don't want to close my MD options though by doing an AOA internship. (I'm guessing the MD derm programs would not accept an AOA internship as a PGY1)
Is my best bet to just apply through the NRMP to MD Derm programs with dually accredited internships at the bottom of my rank list? That way, if I don't get a derm spot, I do one of those internships and apply both DO and MD the next year. The internship programs wouldn't look down on me applying to them as a backup to Derm would they?

How do some people get advanced matches? I have seeen some people know both their internship and PGY2.

Does anyone know an intern who went thru the AOA match and did an internship then went on to do a different residency? For instance what if you matched AOA linked to medicine did your internship then realized you wanted to do PM&R? Does anyone know how to change your contract once you have begun your internship?

hey, im not sure exactly how it works for derms. but for optho, you're actually matching into a PGY-2 or later spot already. the process assumes that you're going to do a PGY-1 internship somewhere. for almost all the optho spots, you would have to go through the allopathic San Francisco Match, but you do that process simultaneously while you go through either or both AOA match and/or NRMP. If you match optho for PGY-2, through the SF match, then you just have to get an accredited 1 year internship through AOA Match or NRMP. you'll already know this because optho match occurs first. ok, then once you've matched, depending on the program you've matched into, you need to find out which type of internship the program you've matched into will accept. but for the most part, what i've seen is that the vast majority of optho spots will take pretty much anything you do as long as you're done your PGY-1. There are a few that are direct programs that let you do your PGY-1 and optho at the same place, but these are much rarer.

completely aside from the SF match, there are a very limited number of optho spots in the NRMP itself ~10. and there are also a few DO specific ones in the AOA match too.

This is how I understand it, not sure if this helps, but if anyone wants to correct me, feel free.

Yeah, allo programs have an advanced match, so you can match into your PGY2 as a senior. However, DO programs don't have this, so you match into your internship year and apply during that year. (no match, just applying).
