No - you should definitely call all the admissions offices individually. Nobody should be afraid to call an admission office ever - they are there to field your questions and check on things for you. If you don't receive an email from a school within a few days, call them just to check the progress. If you haven't heard from them for awhile about the status of your app once you know they've received it, call them again. Continue to do so every week or two (depending on the feel you get from the school). That shows interest. And if a school is not friendly to your inquiries, then you probably don't want to go there because either (a) they're disorganized and will screw things up for you repeatedly or (b) they don't have staff that cares for the students and their well-being. I know of very few optometry schools that fall into those categories! Most are really receptive. They want your moola.

If you're willing to share the identities of those "few schools", please PM me.

I only have experience with schools where I applied and from what I've heard from friends. I think UHCO is the least receptive to applicant inquiries, but that's because the "admissions committee" is basically just one guy who is also a professor, so he's not around much. You'll be hard pressed to get an email or call back from them! And if it's about your application status, the answer is pretty much just "we haven't reviewed yours yet" if you haven't heard from them. I've heard people have received that answer for months on end. That's because they put the apps in a stack and rank them by score. The highest ones get reviewed that week, while the lower ones continue to sit in the pile.

Also, SCCO has gotten mixed reviews. I had an okay time dealing with them, but I know some people have gotten downright hostile responses to some of their questions, or someone has just been rude. I think it's best if you can get a hold of Dr. Munroe - she's super nice and committed to students. Dr. Vorhee's and some of the other admissions staff can be a little rude at times (and make you feel silly that you even called).

I think everyone has different experiences, but ALL schools should treat you well and be receptive to your questions. So again, if they aren't, then you probably don't want to go there because it will probably be the mindset of more staff/faculty than just the admissions folks. I had really positive experiences dealing with Berkeley and SCO, and that definitely extended beyond admissions to absolutely everyone I was in touch with. I think those are two schools that have a good student-focused mindset. But that's just my experience! And I'm sure there are LOTS more schools that are similarly student-focused.

For me I turned in my OptomCAS app one afternoon and then that next morning I saw that I had received an email from Nova saying that they're pleased that I'm interested in their college, they hope to see me soon, etc. Admittedly it was just a very generic email, but it was still nice to see
