I have a keen interest in psychiatry, but the match lists for DO schools seem to suggest that either very few DOs choose to go into this residency, or that very few are accepted into them.

I should also indicate that I am Canadian and would like to return to Canada at some point, so ACGME residencies would be the only option.

Also I was not really able to find a recent answer from an sdn and google search - but psychiatry residencies are normally 3 years in the US and 4 years in Canada, right?

Thanks

Psychiatry is 4 years in the US. 1 intern year + 3 residency years. The reason a lot of match lists are lacking in psychiatry or even neurology is not due to competition, but rather that people don't want to work with those populations. Overall a lot of people have very little trouble landing a psych residency from what I've seen.

ACGME psychiatry is not difficult to match, for US MDs, DOs, and even IMGs. Very often, psych applicants will even surprise themselves by receiving interviews at programs they didn't think they were qualified for, and end up matching there.

All US ACGME psych programs are 4 years. There are some options to do 3+ fellowship, but only once the fellowship is arranged.

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll be fine.

We had several in my class match to psych. Including one to Harvard. (incidentally, UNE had another match to Harvard the year before, too). UNE also had folks match to psych at Dartmouth, UMass, and Maine Med.

Not difficult to match into psych as a DO. Just few folks want to do so.

+1

Good friend of mine just matched an ACGME psych spot as a DO and her board scores were very average.

If psych is what you want, I don't think you need to worry.
