Hi,

I am planning for a second application cycle if this one does not work out for me, and I was wondering what the general consensus is on obtaining a DO and also doing clinical research?

If it helps, I am a non-trad student with a research heavy background (graduate degree in science) and I have always planned on combining my love of science and medicine in my career. I think DOs are amazing, I shadowed a DO surgeon and he was incredible, so I would be proud to earn the privilege of calling myself a DO some day.

The only concern I have is would I be able to conduct clinical research if I went the DO route for my next cycle?
Thank you in advance!

In general the state schools will have more research opportunities, along with PCOM. If you mean as an attending then yeah there won't be too much stopping you from researching whatever you want outside of the usual getting funding issues.

This is def more related to Osteopathic so moving there.

This is possible. Currently writing a manuscript for a clinical research projects I assisted with and we are collaborating or at least, getting our wisdom and guidance with a physician scientist at Yale since they did similar work.

The one thing I need to stress: there are more research opportunities if you go to an MD school. The opportunities are more accessible and usually of wider spectrum (many DO schools will only have your "basics" and not things like "dept of radiation oncology", "dept of digestive diseases" etc etc). The reason for this is because many of the power houses in clinical research reside at MD institutions and that is NOT a way of insinuating a dislike for DOs. That's just the reality of it.

You've gotta follow the money here. Physicians' time isn't free. There has to be a way to pay for protected time for research. The way to do that is through grants. If a faculty member doesn't have research grant funding then research is a hobby they're doing on the side. You can go to NIH eReporter and search for NIH research funding by institution or faculty member name.

And don't be surprised when you put in the majority of DO schools and find "no results"!

i'm a research fellow at my school so i can maybe give some input. i'm a first yr currently working on 4 projects this quarter (2 are collabs with another PI) with the anatomy dept and looking to pub in the near future. there are plenty of chances to do bench work if that's what you are into, for chart reviews i would wait and see during your second and third years if you can grab an interesting case from a doc and find a faculty sponsor who wants to work with you. opportunities are endless if you have a solid research background.

You can definitely conduct clinical research as a DO. The trouble is that most schools don't really have much to offer in that regard, so in a lot of cases, you are stuck looking for opportunities by yourself, which can be much harder, but still doable. I know plenty of people that participated in research during med school, myself included, but everyone I know did so outside of their institution.
