Hi, I am in my last year of pharmacy school. Now I know pharmacy is a stress-free career, and you have a lot of free time (I am just kidding), but wouldn't there be some pharmacists out there who have some small, non-pharmacy related careers on the side?

I just think that no matter how many clinical positions, retail jobs or administrative chairs you are sitting on, everything is still riding on your license in a sue-happy world. So wouldn't that be prudent to have a left-handed job to go along?

Does anybody know anybody like that? And what does those pharmacists do besides pharmacy?

Thanks!

I am a tech, but one pharmacist I work with has a real estate job on the side. He and three other partners buy, run, and sell commercial properties, mainly hotels and strip malls. I don't ask him details, but from what he shares, his income from that is two to three times his pharmacist income. He works as a pharmacist to stay busy and to get health care.

Pharmacist I work with also is a landlord and another one owns a bar.

If an opportunity presented itself and I thought I could make it successful and still be a successful pharmacist then sure I would jump at it!

Once I'm able to pay off my debts and get some capital, I'll probably open up a hookah lounge or get into Motorsports along side with pharmacy.

It never ends with the hookah...

Nope. 😀

I'm like that with a lot of things, once I find something I really like, I become a fiend for it, really, really addicted. Junior High School, I was a fiend for Starcaft, High School for Counter-Strike, College for Counter-Strike Source and Call of Duty 4, now Call of Duty 4 and hookah. Soon to add Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 to that fiend list.

I intend to dive back into real estate/banking a few years after being a practicing pharmacist. Diversifying your income sources = 👍

I knew a lot of RPh's + RE agents during the boom years...most are inactive now or maintain their RE license and retain a handful of clients/listings a year.

I have been a pharmacist for 32 years and I do not know of any pharmacists with other careers. Pharmacy is very demanding on your body. Standing and thinking for 12 hrs. takes it out of you. Most pharmacists may do some side relief for extra money if their employer lets them. Most employers have an non-compete clause that prohibits you working for a competitor. Relief work in a small independent is great if you can find it and is not as stressful as a chain. I had a classmate that is a long distance truck driver and he still drives! Has a big rig and loves to drive. Very different!

Not everyone subjects their body to 12hr shifts.

No. They are supposed to be little pieces of crap made by a toy company.

ps3 or xbox?
I never really played video games, but started mw2 on PS3. I am horrible.
btw, your blog on home med rec sheets and the black hole is both hilarious and completely accurate.

I prefer PC, it's the way that first person shooters were meant to be played. The whole joystick/game pad thing is too inaccurate for me.

Ew, I'm not spending 6 years in college and thousands of dollars to stand around a chain pharmacy for 12 hours.

I'm already in the landlady business, when I get a job I'll be adding more to my real estate empire. And I do all kinds of art, particularly making jewelry, though that's mostly for fun.

My wife's old boss owned a restaurant/bar and worked in a CVS. Myself, I'll probably sell cars on the side if I can scrounge my dad's dealer's license from him in a few years. I grew up working and selling cars, I can't help but still have an itch for it, especially when I'll have some actual capital. I actually already have my business model plotted for it.

On a completely different note, I considered getting MW2, but then I remembered that I'm so sick of most FPSs in general. I know they've pretty much refined the formula to perfection at this point, but it's like playing the same game with prettier graphics every incarnation, almost like Madden or other such trash. I overloaded on counter-strike back in the day, and just got sick of the generic FPS. Now Borderlands, on the other hand, is a cool game. RPG elements, loot collecting, plus FPS. Yum. I'm going to go home and play it now, and I'll smoke my hookah along with it, just to spite sparda! NYAH!
