Hi, im a PGY-2 gen surgery resident and I was wondering is board certified trauma surgeon handle burns and burn surgery or is the need additional training like a burn fellowship inn order to handle those types of cases

Trauma or plastic surgeons handle burns. At the burn center I rotated at as a med student, there were two primary burn surgeons who had done trauma/cc fellowships but whose practice was 100% burn and wound. Call and supplemental coverage came from the other trauma surgeons.

Burn fellowships are often clinical, unaccredited fellowships that are a stepping stone to plastics/US residencies for FMGs.

Yes, to answer your question directly.

It can really matter to a hospital if you get burn training during GS residency (three or four blocks of burn training are offered by all Texas GS residencies), but there are many accredited burn inclusive trauma and surgical critical care fellowships. Almost all the larger tertiary facilities require board certification in Trauma/SCC along with a lot of burn training. I would suggest that integrated PRS residencies do not include enough burn training for ED work.

thanks this really helped. I was also wondering if trauma also did the skin recon or is the patient would be passed on after the initial management of the burns.

The trauma surgeon would be able to handle skin grafts; deeper wounds requiring flaps would generally be the work of PRS.

There is no such thing as a board certified trauma surgeon.

Trauma surgery board exams don't exist.

What I'm assuming you mean is a General Surgeon who had added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care (board certified general surgeon and passed the SCC qualifier exam).

You don't need a burn fellowship to be qualified to handle burn. Some burn surgeons in bigger burn centers either have done surgical critical care and burn or surgical critical care/burn/trauma fellowships. I'm currently not in a dedicated burn fellowship (trauma/surgical critical care) but I will be more than qualified to cover a burn unit if a future job wants me to cover a burn service.
