How many programs should I apply to in the south/east coast? Also, how competitive am I for academic programs?

Step/comlex: 238/650s
Step 2: 250/?
Honors in medicine, mix of hp/p everything else. Will hopefully have 2 anesthesia letters and 1 IM. No research exerience and pretty average ECs. Will be doing 1 away in October— unfortunately couldn’t get one before September.

I'm at an academic medical center in the south, DO with comlex only similar scores to you. Apply broadly (I would not skimp when applying) and you will get some interesting interviews. Step 1 and DO May get you screened out at some places, YMMV...

I'm at a big midwest academic program with similar stats to yours. Did 1 away, applied with two letters and had some nice interviews, although I mostly applied Midwest and a few in the South. Just apply broadly and you should be fine. PM if you have other questions.

240 and 250 USMLE’s will have you sitting fine for most allopathic programs. Letters and your Osteopathic school experience will make the difference; I.e if you did rotations at actual hospitals with allopathic residency programs and have good letters you’ll be fine for 85% of programs. There will always be a few elitist programs that aren’t going to give you the time of day, but on average I think you’ll have a good shot to get a good amount of interviews at mid to mid-high Tier places. But I’d still apply broadly.

Thanks. I am thinking of applying to around 40-50 programs with a 40% community, 50% lower/mid tier academic, and 10% “higher” tier mix. Do you think that’s a good plan?

I think Duke is a stretch, it’s up to you if you want to try, personal statements and letters may get you an interview and that’s where you sell them, but Duke is likely a hard nut to crack as a DO, they’re gonna have 100 allopathic apps as good or better than yours by the numbers.

I don’t know much about Vandy. The others I think are good to go for.

Your app won’t break any walls with programs that have none or 1 or 2 total DOs. Only thing you have to lose I suppose is money to apply, but definitely have some backups.

UNC and MUSC are fine. Duke and Vandy will be a stretch and your "reach" programs. Apply to 5-6 reach programs and a solid 10-12 mid tier programs where your stats line up well along with the fact they accept DOs each year. The more 'DO friendly' programs you apply to the smaller your list needs to be (16 vs 40 for example).
