hey guys i was wondering if dental schools will call my previous jobs or people i've shadowed just so i could give them a heads up, i worked by a dentist about 5 years ago and just incase she forgot about me maybe i could call her and give her a heads up, or even give the receptionists there a heads up as well.🙂

Yep they call every one of the thousands of applicants' previous employers.

They have a ton of applications to go through, so I doubt it.

However, if you were a top contender for a scholarship or something along those lines, they would probably have more reason to do it!

Ask yourself this: Would you? Let's say on average 2000 applicants, each puts down minimum of 1 work and 1 shadowing. 4000 calls. Lols

But to answer your q, to cover you @ss in case they do, let them know beforehand. I'm thinking of calling one of my employers to let them know that they might be receiving a call from the admissions department of an American dental school (lol) because the management has been completely replaced since then, and only the owner will recognize who I am

They wouldn't call in this situation either. Do you really think ADCOMs are gonna hand out a scholarship based on what your supervisor at Jamba Juice, or a dentist you shadowed five years ago has to say? Unlikely. This is why they require LORs.

yeah well you never know if they will or not, thank you i appreciate it 🙂

If I remember correctly there isn't even a place to put contact info for the dentists you've shadowed.

Are you planning on lying???
Why bother asking this question? If you don't want them to know something then don't risk it. It's not worth putting something that probably doesn't matter anyways if there's a chance of you getting dropped

haha no why would i lie about a place i worked at about 5 years ago as a receptionist! the only reason i am asking is because they people that work there have changed and only the doctor would recognize me so if they asked the receptionists there the new people wouldn't know who i am obviously! i was just wondering just so i could give the doctor a heads up.

and as far as the shadowing the doctor is writing the recommendation letter himself, once again they've changed their staff so the receptionists there would not recognize me.

just to be clear👍

It's not hard to look them up 🙂

Yea, but if they were going to contact them they wouldn't plan on searching names, they would ask AADSAS to have you write in their contact info. They will never be contacted. If you lie nobody will know, but when your in d-school the dental gods will smite you and then make you work at aspen dental for the rest of your life.

When you send lor requests to your professors and dentists they do ask for contact info and even business cards. As far as work experience no because if you think about it, it does not weigh much of anything in your app. All it shows is probably that your well rounded in another area. Hope that helps.

Ofc they call and verify... or else how would they know that the "60" hours you shadowed was really 50 and not 60.

Thats right, DS admissions have that much free time on their hands

I noticed this as well. Do secondaries ask for the information? Kinda disappointed to see that anyone can just straight out lie and have a 0% chance of being caught. 👎

Yeah but most people who outright lie give themselves up in interviews. At least I like to believe karma kicks their @&$ lol

IDK, I have a hard time believing that someone is dumb enough to lie and NOT do their research about what people do while "shadowing". You can literally watch youtube videos and regurgitate what you saw and no one would know the difference. The fact that they don't even ask for this information wrong. Even if they don't intend to check, they should at the very least, include that information to deter people from just making things up.

True that. But that's why I said "I like I believe...." That's also a lot of time to invest in a lie when they could just shadow some more. Meh.... People.

I called AADSAS to ask whether they would call my employers to verify the dates of my employment..not because I intended to lie but because I was having difficulty remembering when I was hired at my previous jobs (and I was having trouble getting my previous employers verify the dates as well). They said that they wouldn't contact them. I imagine previous posters are correct also when they say that adcoms don't have time for these kinds of details either. I listed what I thought were appropriate dates for each and didn't have any problem.
