Sorry to be bothering the dentists on SDN with a naive question. I'm wondering can a dental student start working [either at a clinic or his/her own office] once he/she graduates from dental school?

Also, let's say you graduate in California. Can you move to New York and start your practice ASAP? or you need to take another test or sth?

Please don't hesitate to answer any of my two questions. Thank you

In most states, yes, you can start working immediately after graduation. However, some states, including New York, have started a required post-graduate year (whether in a general practice residency or specialty residency) before a dentist can get licensed in that state.

In terms of school in one state and practice in another, it depends on region. Most states are part of regional boards. If you want to go to a different region immediately, you would have to take that state's board exams.

You can start practicing dentistry after passing the state boards.

yes you can as soon as you get licensure, however can you practice at a proficient enough level for a traditional private practice? no. Almost all dentists who have been practicing for a while will state that the real learning begins after school.
