DO deposits

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most of the school's deposits aren't due until december so apply and interview early.

You can ask the schools to extend their deposit due date but the most I've gotten is about 3 extra days. In the end the $1000-2000 is chump change when compared to the cost of medical school, but it's chump change that I don't have. If you're applying next cycle, apply early. The first rounds of deposits are due in December and you could have multiple acceptances at that point. Deposit deadlines are as follows:
  • those accepted prior to November 15 will have until December 14
  • those accepted between November 15 and January 14 will have 30 days
  • those accepted between January 15 and May 14 will have 14 days
  • those accepted on or after May 15 may be asked for an immediate deposit

Wow i guess they have their ways of encouragement

So if I get into a DO and then get into another school I like better I just lose my $1000? What is the best way to avoid this mess

DO deposits suck. They are protecting themselves but its just something you got to deal with. Applying early may help since you get more time in the beginning. I lost a lot of money because of this. Overall though its nothing in the grand scheme of things and worth it.

It's kinda the definition of "non-refundable." You are going to have to make a decision and be confident that it is the right one for you and your family. Either that or have a boat-load of cash on hand.

If I were a betting man (which I am), I would bet that you don't have a boat load of cash on hand, and will have to do your research and make the right decision the first time around. Just remember when you're doing your research:

1. Think about starting a new thread, then realize how dumb that would be, go to google.com
2. Type in your search eg: "X D.O. school VS. Y D.O. school SDN," press enter.
3. Go to already existing discussion and read about it.
4. believe about 1/4 of what you are reading as truth
5. pay your deposit, go to med school, become physician.
