hi all..

i am waiting on stupid AACOM to finish processing my app..... but i was just wondering... b/c i couldnt find info on the individual school sites... do DO schools have secondaries after the primary? how does it work?

also.. i would love it if anyone could tell me what they think my chances would be of getting into a DO shcool...(from personal experiences)

stats:
undergrad gpa: 3.4
MCAT: 23

ec's: lots of leadership positions in various organizations, clincial hands on experience working with doctors, biomed research at NIH...a few strong commitments to community service... w/o getting into details... fairly strong and well rounded ec's!

also i hold an MPH degree from a fairly reputable school.

i just have a crappy mcat score..which i improved only 3 points from the first time! :*(

thanks!

somehow i doubt that u even searched for ur question's answer... given that it's a "gimme"

these "do i have a chance?" threads are getting to the point of annoyance.

well, the search function is turned off right now.

To answer the questions: 1) yes, they have secondaries; 2) nobody here can tell you what your chances are...there are just too many variables in the process.

i've got a friend who had the same GPA as you and a 24 MCAT. She's in her first year at NYCOM now. she also got into PCOM but wasn't granted an interview at umdnj-som. so, yes, with your stats you do stand a chance.

Don't worry for now. there's not much you can do while aacom processes your app.

as for secondaries..these are the three schools i know about:

pcom -- has a secondary. mails it to you after they get your application. i don't remember exactly, but i think this one has 1 essay question about why you wanna attend.

nycom -- has a secondary, but they also screen applications. so, they won't send you the secondary unless they wanna interview you. it's got a bunch of short questions that can best be answered with your resume handy. you hand in the secondary the day you go in for your interview

umdnj som -- has a secondary. mails it out after they get your application.

AACOM is still processing your application? Woah. I was under the impression that most DO schools needed to have all your stuff in (secondaries and all) very soon. I know these schools have cut-offs. So, not to burst your bubble but you may be out of the running for a few schools simply due to the fact that your primary never made it in time.

the process for gettign into DO school is the same as for getting into MD school:\
there are primaries, secondaries and LORs, and then interviews

only difference is that you need a letter from a DO for some schools

I wonder sometimes why people wonder if the process is the same. I also wonder about the people that ask if the MCAT is needed to apply DO. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

DO application process = MD application process with only 3 differences
1. Do letter of recommendation needed at a bunch of schools
2. AACOMAS vs AMCAS
3. Applying to DO school instead of MD schools

Sorry OP, but when you apply this late and ask a question like this, you are bound to have people question your intentions about applying to DO schools. Sorry, but it is a fact that usually people who apply this late, are more than likely people who got turned down by MD schools. And every school site I have gone to spells out their process and states they have secondaries.

As to your chances, you are above the minimum stats cut off so there may be hope for you but it is soo very late and that will work against you.

I applied to 12 schools and all had secondaries with Western (5 essays) being the longest and Des moines and NYCOM (Fill in questons) being the shortest. They average about 1-2 essays each. These are the schools that I received secondaries from: NYCOM, PCOM, Des Moines, Edward Via Virgina, CCOM, AZCOM, Kirkesville, Touro, Michigan, Western, NSU, LECOM.

Chances? I am going to have to agree with Amy B... your stats would have qualified you for a interview spot, but it is too late in the game to predict.

This was from January, and I hope that simsima03 reads this. I did seem a bit gruff in my above post and I wanted to apologize. I must have been having a bad day. I hope you were able to get an acceptance somewhere. 🙂

First of all i want to agree with what others said and also say, "why so late?" Most schools are pretty much filled or have wait lists, and this is probably a waste of time on your part because of ur stats. What did u think, that osteopathic schools have so such low standards that they'll just accept anyone this late, Lets be honest, u applied to allopathic schools first, right? I'm not trying to get nasty I'm just sick of the people who use osteopathic schools as a last chance. Incidentally, if i'm mistaken on this assumption i apologize in advance. I just cant help wondering why you are applying so late. The cards just point to the idea that you are using this as a last resort. I mean if u really took this avenue seriously why didn't you apply earlier or do a little research on your own, it's not like the answers are hidden, they're right on the aacomas website and school websites..........see where it says suppl. app fee. If this is totally not the case then i am sorry.

simsima03:

I'll try to offer you some helpful advice:

Although you are applying late and MAY be using osteopathic schools are as backup (I'm not drawing assumptions) you may still have a chance. I know that LECOM - Bradenton is still accepting applications and is interviewing through June. So there is hope. Also, TUCOM - Las Vegas may still be accepting applications, I'm not positive though. I'm not sure if you applied to these schools, but they might be your only chances of getting a spot in the class of 2008.

Best of luck to you.

Radak

Guys, the post is from January. Eyecon just brought it up so he could call Tapoutt a loser.

whoops........hahaha........didnt even realize that was from january.....ill be the first to laugh at myself. I still feel some of what i had to say applies. Thats still kinda late.

Some extra info from what I remember:
MSUCOM (my school woo woo): Had by far the most extensive and annoyingly long secondary app.
DMU: Something like one page which considted of listing your experience, info on where to send recommendation letters and replying whether or not you were ever convicted of a felony.
KCOM: Fairly long.
LECOM: Also fairly long
