Do DO's get paid less?

I was wondering if DOs and MDs get paid the same.
Also, is it harder for DOs to get residencies?

DOs get paid a lot more, albeit in pesos.

Yes...

some get paid more for OMT though...

Depends on the residency....

Not true!!! DO's and MD's have the same opportunity to make the same number of dollars, they are NOT reimbursed differently.

Half right, but it still is true that some osteopaths get paid a nice load of money for OMT. It's not covered by insurance, so anything they earn is cold hard cash in their pockets.

i think he was referring to the option of being paid in cash for omt.

edit** i got beat by johnDO's reply... darn.

UH? Did someone say they were reimbursed differently? I think San Juan...was just joking...or were you referencing the OMT DO$>MD$?

Wait a minute. Chiropractic is covered and OMT isn't?

WTF?

I'm not 100% sure, I just know that many osteopathic physicians accept cash for OMT. I do not know if any insurance covers it. Not all health insurance covers chiropractic manipulation either though.

Hate to break it to ya, but OMT IS covered by every insurance company. If you can find one that does not cover it let me know because all the major insurers do. 🙂

**Edit: Just remember that the docs that accept cash for it usually do it because the reimbursement standard paid by the company does not cover their time to do OMT.

Well hey, you didn't burst any bubble of mine. I stand corrected 🙂

Thanks for the info.

both of you are correct.....I was unclear in my quick ass post.

all PHYSICIANS are paid the same...some DO's can use OMT as a side business or a total business and can get cash for it. I have even heard of some insurances covering small bits too. Anyway, all the DO's I shadowed didn't use OMT so all their payments were the same....sorry for the ambiguity.

The DO that wrote my LOR letter charges $130 per visit for his OMT services.

I know a few girls downtown that charge near that too... 😀

Seriously...thats a good amount of cash for OMT. I wonder how many patients he sees in a day. Sure beats the small doolars on cents rembursements on medicaid

It stands for Osteopathic Manipulative Theory

theory...???

lol, i heard of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), therapy, technique, but theory is a first

not trying to rag on u or nething.

The site you referenced is a Canadian one:

http://www.ohwi.org/programs/diplomate/

which is probably why we have never heard of Osteopathic manipulative theory before. It?s a school for those who practice OMT exclusively. At the same time the office is in Delaware...how about that?

I've heard of it called "Theory" before (in the US), as in the classes that are taught at some medical schools. You're so nit picky, who cares about it?

some DO's can use OMT as a side business or a total business

There is even a CRAZY idea that some DO's actually "integrate" OMT into their practice (not making it a "side business" or the only thing they do). This MUST be witchcraft...

must be 😉

I have yet to see one do it though...I am sure I'll see a lot more of it this fall 🙂

pardon me for my ignorance, but OMT is what??

At CCOM, they call it OMM -- Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine....

you can call it whatever you want...it still stands for the same thing, but i like how OMM sounds better than theory

do DO's get good exchange rates on those pesos?
Yes, we do. We know how to "massage" the system so to speak.

DO's get paid in peanut shells. We then take these shells and mold them into massive boats to illegally smuggle immigrants over the US. It is in this fashion that we actually receive money. The AOA is actually a large peanut boat factory that belts out checks to every DO in the US every year.

what happens to the actual peanut itself?

How do you think we eat, man?

Great question! Acutally the peanuts are consumed by folks who frequent bars, who buy unshelled peanuts, or even shelled peanuts! We have a massive crew of immigrants who dig endlessly through garbage cans throughout the US just scrounging for every last peanut shell they can get their hands on...it is in this way that we recruit even more DO's. As these peanut shell hunters actually become "physicians" later on!

We also have contracts with every country bar and hillbilly steak house in the US that uses peanut shells as a sort of natural carpeting on their floors. We also lobby against the use of sawdust which can also serve as a natural carpeting.

Vent, it's not peanut shells it's pistachio shells. :horns:

This thread concerns me greatly

MDs and DOs are paid the same when practicing in the same field. However, because most MDs choose to specialize, in general, they do make more (i.e. surgeon's salary vs internal medicine doc's salary are quite different).

Say what you will above poster. All I know is that peanut boats are at an all time high.

So is their malpractice (surgeon v. internist).

Would it be reasonable that DOs actually can make more money then an MD?

2 Reasons ( i have nothing to back this).

1. Imagine two FM or IM docs. DO can do OMT as an extra procedure where MD cannot.
2. Many people dont know what a DO is. So they would be less likely to be sued because these same people wont see DO's as money bags where they would if they went to an MD. Thus lower Malpractice.

Crazy rationalizations but they make sense to me. In some cases a DO can make more then MDs.

1. Yes
2. No
