DO EM Ingerview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied about 10 days ago too. I applied to 14 and I've received 3 invites so far from places that I am not rotating at. No word for the other places. I'm sure part of it depends on where you applied.

I applied to every program in the country.

I applied a week ago(ish) and have 3 interviews, one from a place I rotated at.

Congratulations on the Invites. I applied to a boat load of programs (a few less than every program) and if I get an interviews at one quarter of my places I am going to be swamped. Has any one done the odds on how many interviews you need per programs that will rank you? Assuming you are an weak candidate and go to the interview and fade into the crowd don't do any thing memorable negative of positive, then how any interviews does one need to get ranked.

do you guys mind posting where you got the invites?

I waited till 9/1 so I could submit Md and Do apps together, within 5 hours of submitting I had emails from 2 DO places, one in Mich and one in PA that had a list of their interview dates and "You will here from us within 2 weeks if we have selected or declined you for an interview" So my guess if you submitted 2 weeks ago is you should have invites rolling in any day.

If you applied to a ton of DO programs your # to match is low, like 4-5 interviews. I applied to 13 DO and 10 MD, as far as my DO programs, 3 of them did not fill all of their spots last year, so if you rank all that you interview at, your DO match chance is 100% i think. Atleast thats what I'm banking on, granted my top choice is Allopathic.

Just because you get an interview, doesn't mean you'll be ranked. Just as applicants can choose not to rank programs where they interview, programs can choose not to rank applicants they interview.

I have interviews at Hamot in Erie, Arrowhead in Cali and Doctors in Columbus.

i only applied to 8 DO. 42 MD.

I submitted my app on 9/1, got interview offer on 9/3 for Lehigh Valley. Thats all i got so far, but its been 4 days. will update

Also, in response to the fellow, there are more DO EM spots than applicants once you remove those who take allo spots so in general, if you dont suck at your interview or fail your boards, if they interview you they will rank you, just not necessarily very high. Get 10-12 inerviews and ur DO chances are pretty good from what ive read as many programs still dont fill. Just what Ive read though.

I'm pretty sure there were only 2 or 3 programs that didn't fill last year. 1 in NJ and 1 or 2 in MI. Don't remember the programs though.

The fact that there was even one spot that went unfilled implies that there were more spots than applicants does it not? Unless no one applied to those 2-3 programs, no program should go unfilled unless there are less applicants than spots. So if you are applying to all or most all of the DO em programs, you should get a spot i would think. Unless the applicants last year sucked and they decided to go unfilled as opposed to take a bad resident. But that would imply that there were alot of bad residents.

That's a simplistic look. Programs not filling are a function of not enough people ranking them, and the program not ranking enough people, or a combination thereof. There are more applicants than spots.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure one of the programs had a really early application deadline leading to fewer people applying/interviewing --> fewer ranked candidates. If I'm thinking of the same program (UMDNJ???) then it's got an early deadline again this year. I could be wrong on the program though...

Not at all. There are a handful of unfilled spots in the ACGME match each year and I can't imagine you'd suggest there are more spots than applicants in that match.

Not every applicant is someone that the PDs/attendings want to take on in their program. Some of the people applying for these spots have multiple course and COMLEX failures. Programs aren't likely to want to rank applicants with a long history of remediation/failures. Add to that personality differences, not "clicking" with the program on a rotation, etc and there are definitely people who are not ranked by programs.

.
For the ACGME match yes, but were talking about the AOA match. More than 50% of graduating DOs who match EM, match into allo spots, greatly reducing the # that can fill the DO spots. I imagine this has alot to do with allo EM being 3 years vs osteo being 4, I know thats weighing on my mind with 360k in student debt collecting interest every year. And as MDs cannot apply to DO programs, the # of bodies that can fill the DO spots is a function of the total going into EM that year minus the number that take allo spots. I am just speculating from what I have read, but if in a given year a high # of DOs match allo em, the # that can fill DO spots will be significantly lower. Whether it is low enough to be less than the total # of spots I dont know. But there are only 20 something DO schools. I guess it varies year to year. I don't really care where I match so long as I graduate to be an EM attending 🙂

It is still competitive in the DO world. There are many that don't match. Think about the number of students graduating per year and not the number of schools. I think my school on average has about 20 people match EM programs (don't know the specific breakdown for DO or MD). There are always people beyond that who don't match in either match and end up in another program. Definitely don't downplay the match. There won't be spots open past match day. (for osteo...i know they changed up the scramble for allo)

Guess I just underestimated the # of DO applicants as you're saying 20 in your class. My school is the largest of the DO schools and we only have 14-15 a year so I assumed others had less. Thanks for the information.

I got an email from Henry Ford Wyandotte , MI. This year so far they have 86 applicants in about 25 days after the first day of the application season. Their email indicates only two interview days for four PGY1 positions.

This program started 6/16/2009 so has been running for about 15 months, but reports a 100% completion rate? Last year they interviewed 40 applicatants. 20 persons per interview day seems like way to many for a program this size?

Wow, that's nuts. The applicant pool and the only two interview days...I wonder how they'll do it. When is the 2nd day?

Not sure what an inter"griew" thread is but its a little quiet up here. Should we do an official thread with the site we were selected to interview at and the date? For me:
St Barnabas Sept 29
Good Samaritan Oct 20
UMDNJ Nov 1
OUCOM Doctors Nov 18

I went ahead and combined things into one post like the allopathic thread. Feel free to add new interviews as they come in. I don't have my calendar with my dates now, but I know I'll be seeing Natatiap on the interview trail.🙂
