Does anyone have any information or opinions on the DO EM residencies at Genesys in Gran Blanc, MI or Doctors hospital in Columbus OH - thanks

DOsDAD,
I was a med student at Genesys 3 years ago. At that time the EM program was pretty good. The program was busy, I think they saw about 60k per year. The department was always full. It is one of 2 level II trauma centers in the area (Hurley Medical Center is the other). Mostly blunt trauma. Lots of acutely ill people. Weekly didactic sessions which last about 5 hours given by staff, residents, and other departments. The Flint area is not the greatest place to live though.

Hope this helps,
AM

To say that Flint area is not such a pleasant place to live is an understatement. After, growing up in the Flint area...I'd imagine any outsider would want to slit their wrists with a Trisket after just spending 1 month in this blackhole of boredom. Just take a drive into "down town" Flint and witness first hand the dreariness and gloom. I don't want to scare anybody away. Nonetheless, if you match at Genesys consider yourself lucky enough to train at a "boutique" style private DO hospital with adequate training. Just make sure you get plenty of vacation time to get out of Flint with your sanity intact.

Good analogy... I like the triscuit part... might have to use that in the future. I'll give you credit though.

DOsDad-
If you or whoever you are asking for is interested in EM programs in the OH/MI area, you needn't be restricted to the DO residencies... as there are LOTS of MD residencies there that are DO friendly. I applied to most of them, and got interviews at Ohio State, Metrohealth/Case Western, St. Vincent's, and Akron General. I know Akron City/Summa and Wayne State are also DO friendly...

Yep, and of course, I go to WSU.

Doctors in Columbus is particularly strong in OH, and Grandview is strong as well in Dayton (I run into these residents frequently as they often come to our didactics).

I agree with Quinn...the entire midwest in general is DO friendly...Wayne State is so DO friendly that they have DO residents in every single department...including ophthalmology, ENT, EM, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery...I'd rather go to Wayne State anyways...that way you'll be able to swing on over to Romeo and Detroit and visit the old stomping grounds of Kid Rock and Marshal Mathers...be sure to visit Kim and kick that biatch's ass just like Marshal did...you can even go to Troy, Michigan...just take I-75 south and exit #69 which is Big Beaver Road...no I did not make that up...enjoy...oh and make it a point to head on over to Birminham, MI and say hi to Tim Allen aka Tim "The Toolman" Taylor

Quinn...congratulations on the match...Tampa General is going to be top notch...

QuinnNSU,

Did you interview at Metro, Summa and Akron General? If so what were your impressions. I live in the Akron area and plan to return for a EM residency after LECOM. Thanks

I interviewed at St. Vincent's, MetroHealth/CWRU/CC, and Akron General. I got offered an interview at Ohio State but turned it down. Akron City never offered an invite for me.

I liked all three programs. I ranked MetroHealth #4 on my list, and Akron #5. St. V's was #8. (last). I ended up turning down about half my interview offers after I got real sick of staying at the Fairfield Inn.

I liked all three programs (obvilusly, since I ranked them all). They each have something different to offer... so it all depends on what you will look for in a residency. At your stage of the game, it is NOT important whatsoever... just be keen on which residencies are DO friendly (more and more will open up for us as we speak... I will MAKE TGH/USF be DO Friendly!).

OH/MI/PA are very DO friendly states, if that's where you want to go for residency, you will have no problem whatsoever!

Speaking of DO EM residencies? When I went around looking at the hospitals to do my 3rd/4th year rotations at I was surprised w/ the amount of diversity in DO EM programs. A few were large level II trauma centers with ER?s the size of some small community hospitals and then there were these other places. I don?t mean to step on anyone?s shoes, but some of these joints were REALLY small, hardly any research going on and had a VERY small pt. volume (apx 20K/yr) as compared to many allopathic institutions. They were not trauma centers and there didn?t seem to be anything going on at all. This was kind of upsetting for me and is causing me to lean more and more towards going the allopathic route for residency choices (yes its still a very long time away!).

I was wondering if I could get some of your guys? input on a few of the larger, more urban DO residency programs out there, i.e. what are some of the more solid programs?

Thanks,
FG

As a 4th year DO student (who matched into an MD residency), I can agree with your opinion that many DO residencies are somewhat... lackluster. When I interivewed at York Hospital in PA (the MD one), I found out that the DO residency has less than 20k visits a year (they quoted me 18k)... plus the DO hospital gets no trauma whatsoever.

There are definately a few good DO residencies. I've heard some good things abou Lehigh valley. I'm sure there are some good ones in NY too, as well as OH (have a classmate going to Doctor's Hospital... he tells me good things).

Beware. A DO EM residency had to shut its door halfway through this year... another one is on the way. That's why I wholeheartedly would suggest an MD residency.

I have a couple of questions. Which Programs shut their doors and which one is on the way out?
Second, what do you know about Mt Sinai, I had really wanted to go there. I am having a hard time between choosing climate over prestige and tauma exposure. Please e-mail me since if you can't answer openly here.

One of the interns at the hospital I did my cores at went to Des Peres hospital, in St. Louis... she was pretty excited about going there, it was a 4 year program (from what I remember). Anyways, a few months into her starting there, the program closed its doors... sucks sucks sucks, she was a cool intern.

The rumor mill has told me to stay away from Mt. Sinai... that it is in danger of either losing its accreditaion or funding or something along those lines. I wish it weren't true, I think they had something great going (since I went to NSU, I was in contact with Mt. Sinai from the git-go). Great location, pretty high volume... attendings are pretty nice... and some research going on...

Q

did the DesPeres residency really close? Not that it would surprise me, (the hospital was a core site for me a few years back) but the residency is still listed on the ACOEP website...and Debbie Hebert, DO from DesPeres is the ACOEP resident section president.
Personally, I find the education monumentally suspect...but I would still find it sad that they closed (still have ties there).

EW-
Yep. Intern at Suncoast Hospital (Largo, FL, where I did my cores) went there as a PGY-2 (or OGME-2 or whatever), and a few months into it (this past year), they closed. She transferred to Mt. Sinai (which was her fisrt choice to begin with anyways). I hope she doesnt' have any problems there.

We all know how slow it takes for the ACOEP and the AOA to update their sites, so it doesn't really surprise me its still there.

Q

I have a 3 part question:
Part 1:

there are LOTS of MD residencies there that are DO friendly.

Is it possible for an allopathic student to get a DO residency?

EDIT: Scratch that first part. I just read that it is NOT possible

Part 2:
I noticed there were more (than recent history) unfilled ER residencies (MD) this year. Are they not being filled because no one wants them (and if so, why?), or are they just giving their spots away to other departments (Is this what happened to Cook County for example)? Is there any way to tell?

Part 3:
I went to Guadalajara for med school and am going to do 5th pathway at NY Medical College this upcoming year. The problem is that I would really like to get an ER spot somewhere. At what point do I decide to take anything (those spots that keep going unfilled) and when do I say this program is so bad that I'll never get a job when it's over?

Thanks😕 😕

Hello:

I was wondering if anyone would care to comment on CCOM's EM residency program. I know that I am early in the game, but getting a head start on where I think I want to go right now is just the type of guy I am. 🙂 Also, I really want a DO EM residency and be able to stay in the chicagoland area, so as you can decipher for yourselves this program would be a blessing!! Anyway, thanks for any info you have time to share with me...I greatly appreciate your time!! 🙂 Thanks and goodbye for now!

Beware! The numbers that NRMP posted for unmatched EM spots may not be correct! As one SDN poster here noticed, Duke supposedly had "0" matches, but in reality, they had some, it was an error with the NRMP. That being said, it is likely that the # of EM spots unfilled has changed negligibly...

All you can do for yourself in your application is:
APPLY TO AS MANY PLACES AS YOU CAN. This is key. Once the interviews get handed out, THEN you can decide to "take a crappy program" over another program, or however you want to handle your application. Its way too early to start picking programs at this point, especially if you are an underdog (like I was). Just apply to lots and lots of places (I applied to 40+) and see what the net pulls in.

DO2007-
Can't comment on the DO CCOM residency, however, there are several EM residencies in the Chicago area that are DO-Friendly (Cook County and Resurrection come to immediate mind).
Q

I gave this info previously, but www.acoep.org will have the CCOM EM residency listed...but as per DO tradition, no real website for the residency specifically...leaving DO students to ponder.

Residencies fill obviously in cycles and at the height of the show "ER", EM residencies were jam packed...even more than today. And remember, when a residency doesn't fill on day one, the certainly will fill after the scramble. EM continues to be one of the most sought after positions in medicine.
