Do foreign trained dentists need to do anything b4 practicing in the states?

Just wondering what a foreign educated dentist would need to practice in the US. My friend's fiancee is from India and practices there, is there a fellowship or anything of the sort she need to do before practicing here? Or just pass the state boards and off to the races? I did a search for "foreign" didnt get much of what I need.

Go visit the Dental - Internatinal Dentist section and read! Or limit your search within dental. Generally, she will have to sit both Part 1 and 2 exams and then apply for state licence exam. Some states will require her to get additional 2 more years (advanced standing) undergraduate education to receive a US degree before she can apply for the state licence exam; some will require advanced specialty education before licence exam; some will even make you repeat 12th Grade (joke)!!!!

This licensing issue is an on-going topic in that forum, participate and enjoy.

From what I gather from fellow upperclassman that are from other countries: You have to re-do the last 3 years of dental school in an ADA accredited school and take the board part one. So in essence, it does not matter your friend is a dentist in India, in the eyes of US law they have to be re-trained in the USA.

I'm glad this is the case so that our profession does not become flooded like many others.

hey thanks gang. it will help my bud a lot. he just graduated from med school 2 weeks ago. i guess his parents are hooking him up with a "nice" girl from overseas since slim pickings here. blah.

preludexl, I don't think that it's slim picking over here at all (well maybe justwhere I live). Maybe your friend has to up his game, or is looking for the wrong types of women, or rather, it's seems like it's an arranged marriage and he has no choice.
