I'm a DO PGY-2 training in NJ just outside Philadelphia. I love Boston but all my research seems to suggest they prefer MDs, especially for residency. I was wondering...in the Boston metro area (up to 30 miles outside Boston), how realistic is it for a DO to be able to obtain a primary care job? Again, I'm open to working in the suburbs/exurbs. Thanks.

You can always open a practice.

Never once have I seen a primary care job that specify it was only for MDs. I know DOs that work in New England. I’m not sure what you mean by Boston prefers MDs. It’s good to remember that it’s a numbers game…there are far less DOs than MDs and no DO schools in Boston so of course there are going to be less there.

UNE is in Maine and some of their students do their rotations in the Boston area, but overall, there are more MD programs in Boston and mass in general so more MDs in the area.
OP it doesn’t mean you won’t find work, but you will be competing with the others MDs coming out of Boston programs…many that want to stay in the area.

As a primary care attending? No one will care. I get offers from Ivy League health systems in big NE cities all the time as a DO resident.
