Hello,

I am very interested in moving down to North Carolina to do my residency because #1: They have a bunch of top shelf programs there #2 my girlfriend of 7 1/2 years is located there.

I was curious to see how DO friendly people thought north carolina was for an osteopathic student who did not take the USMLE I

Carolinas Medical Center Program
Charlotte, North Carolina: was pretty much told by the program director that he has never hired a DO for his residency (8 years)

University of North Carolina Hospitals Program
Chapel Hill, North Carolina: I know it is a really good program.

Duke University Hospital Program
Durham, North Carolina:

Pitt County Memorial Hospital/East Carolina University Program
Greenville, North Carolina: Seem to be the most DO friendly out of the bunch.

Wake Forest University School of Medicine Program
Winston-Salem, North Carolina: don't know much about this program.

All you have to do is look at their current residents, dude. None of the programs you listed have more than 1 or 2 DO's in their entire program, though.

I have looked at the sites, and I am aware that there are only 1-2 DO's per program, is there a number (ex. 30% of residents that are DO's) that is considered to be DO friendly?

1-2 is pretty good. You must realize that DOs are in the minority; ~125 allopathic schools vs ~25 osteopathic schools (with ~50% of their grads going allo). Putting the numbers aside, if a program has a DO in it, they're obviously open to taking DOs, and thus, DO friendly.

contact the DO residents at the place and see what advice they have to offer. They would probably know more about the politics at those places then any of us here.

EMRA isn't updated because Wake has a DO there from AZCOM in PGY-1class.

Yeah EMRA's website is not great.

It used to be awesome, before they decided to erase all pertinent infomation and made it difficult to assess each program rapidly.....HEAR THIS EMRA, YOUR SITE BLOWS.....ah much better.

I emailed them repeatedly two years ago when the search function on their site went belly up. They have no fricken clue how to run a database. Now they've essentially reset the database and are relying on chiefs to reenter the data. Real, real smart.

There were several programs I noticed on there that said non to DO's, but then I look at their class roster and there are 3-4.

I can not speak for any other programs, but at Wake you will find it very difficult to get a spot if you haven't taken USMLE. So, I would definantly take USMLE II. I am sure that Wake is not the only program that doesn't want to go through the trouble of trying to interpret COMLEX scores.

I'm not sure that even matters. There are plenty of other great programs out there. Kinda sucks if you're regionally restricted though.

Highland is one of them, a DO is an r3 and they have taken several before. USC was another one. UCLA olive view, they have one which is an R2 in a hospital that has historically been DO unfriendly.

This information may be outdated. There is currently a 2nd year resident who is a DO. He graduate from my school.
