Hello everyone,
so I am currently a senior biomedical science major/public health minor; my science gpa is a 2.67 and my overall is a 3.1. I have not yet taken the DAT's because I want to fully complete organic chemistry before I take it.

Now, I would say my entire life I've always wanted to be a dentist. I went to a technical high school that offered a dental program. I also recently traveled to Haiti to teach a school the importance of oral health care. I have shadowed a couple of dentists and been actively involved in several student organizations including the pre-dental society.

I am not sure if above even matters if you do not make the academics cut, but I just want to know if it is even possible? I have a few more semesters and have hired a private tutor, so hopefully my GPA will be boosted by then.

Overall, my question is: Do I have a shot? When should I apply? Should I visit schools or should I wait till the interview? How is everyone funding for these interviews, Kaplan courses and fees?

Also, I was thinking about taking a business course my last semester. Has anyone done this and what class do you recommend?

Thanks so much!

Well, about 2 years ago I was in your exact same situation. I decided to stick it out and stay in undergrad to get my GPA up, taking all upper level Bio electives BIOCHEM 1, BIOCHEM2, GENETICS, MICROBIOLOGY, BIOMECHANICS. I took DAT twice first time i got a 19/19/14 PAT, didnt apply. Took it again this summer got a 20/20/21, after getting 4As and one C+ in genetics from that pseudo post bac my cum GPA is a 3.15 and Science is a 3.1, BCP is a 3.1. Im taking Neuroscience, Stem cell biology, Biochemistry of embryology and Developmental biology currently and making A's. I applied to 20 sum odd schools, and I only have one interview lined up. My advice to you is the best thing you can do is get out of your undergrad and start a masters as soon as possible, especially with science gpa in that category, b/c most people have cut off at 2.75 at the minimum. I would then take each step very carefully, do well on DAT. But you should really look for a one year special masters program, and just kill that, it looks way better, and yoll have a separate GPA as a post bac, so it will separate it from your undergrad. Just my personal advice, Im getting ready to apply to masters programs rite now just in case. Good luck, PM me if you have any questions

Long story short, Is Ive made deans list 3 semesters in a row, in some of the hardest possible science courses you can take, I have very good extra curriculars, and I have strong letter of REC. If I could of personally done it all over again, i would have gotten out of undergrad ASAP, and started a special masters program, I believe I would have had more luck this cycle.

Wow periopocket, that was really helpful. I'll be sure to look into that and message you if anything arises.
