Hi,
So I am doing research and my PI told me to do a pubmed search and find related article to make a summary table for each. I am assuming this will be somehow used in writing the paper as the intro, concl, etc. I was wondering if my work can be given credit by having my name published? I understand that it pretty much depends pn the PI, but is what I am doing an indication? thanks a lot!🙂

You'll probably get a better response if you asked your PI. If s/he uses anything from your table odds are, at the very least, you'll be credited somewhere. As for being a second, third of fourth author- it is dependent on how many writers and how important your table is to the paper in question. If it is crucial and completely based upon it, then you may have a decent chance of being listed as a coauthor, if the table is a side note, then there may be a chance you aren't going to be listed as a coauthor at all but just credited somewhere in the paper. Keep in mind that to be listed as an author, traditionally, you should have had a writing role in it or had participated in the experiments that the results are based upon. However, if this is a review article or s/he is the only writer and you're the only other contributing party, you may have a shot, who knows. The point is: Ask your PI. 🙂 If you want to be tactful, ask your PI if you should include this in your resume or application to medical school as a publication coauthor, or if you should write that you participated in the production of the paper.

Probably not, he's just asking you to do the absolute most basic legwork of any scientific project... making sure nobody else has done your experiment already.

Generally to be authored on a paper you need to be a part of the unique work that is done as part of the preparation of that manuscript. IE conduct an experiment, tabulate the results, and draw preliminary analyses. Even if that experiment is 1 of 5 in a paper you'd probably get an author spot.
