Hey all, I've been lurking around the forums for a while and really enjoyed the comments and the motivation that this forum gives me.

I'm just wondering if I have a chance to recover from my poor drive my freshman year. I am currently a sophomore at a community college in FL, and I'm planning to transfer to the University of Florida in the summer.

At the moment I have a 2.6 overall GPA and probably a lower science GPA. When I transfer to UF, my current GPA will be classified as third-party grades and the GPA I receive at UF will be the GPA I graduate with.

So my question is, do I have a slight chance of pursuing my dream of becoming a dentist with such poor freshman/sophomore GPA?

I realize that dental school takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I see here that people are maintaining a high GPA and score amazing results on the DAT.

I'm not posting so you guys can just tell me what I want to hear, I'm just here to receive full honest answers. I realize that I've slacked off and it's time to pick up the pace and get some good grades!!

Thank you!

Hello

Ito be honest with you , I think you do. Maybe not right after undergrad. This is my story. My freshman year I had a 2.2. My sophomore I brought it up to a 2.7 and by the time I graduated , my GPA was 3.1 and my sGPA was 3.0. I am an URM and this I applied smart and had interviews. However, an acceptance never came. I now doing a Masters In Biology, In order to prove the adcoms and myself that I do deserve this. Keep your head up. If you have to do a masters, it will be just an extra 1 or 2 years of your life. That's nothing compared to all the time you would have left if you were to become a dentist

When you apply you'll have to report all of your grades from colleges and universities attended, and AADSAS will calculate their own gpa for you based on your transcripts submitted. You'll have to bring your science gpa up to at least a 3.0-3.2 and score high on the DAT, coupled with an excellent application. The road is long and hard, but you still have 3 semesters to pull up your grades before making application.

Also, some schools won't take pre-reqs at community colleges so do some research into schools and you may have to retake some courses which can bring up your gpa.

As long as you get excellent grades from now on, I think schools would be willing to overlook your freshman year.
