I'm seriously considering a career change to Dentistry. I have been very interested in medicine and especially dentistry since high school, but my parents dissuaded me based on the cost and time commitment. Instead, I went to an excellent school for political science. I dropped out my 4th year for financial reasons, moved across country and started a family and worked full time.

Fast forward a few years (I just turned 27) and I am almost finished with a business degree, at a locally (Midwest) well regarded private school. I have a 4.0 GPA with 4 classes to go. I have recently spent time "behind the scenes" with a local dentist and it has really renewed my interest in dentistry.

My question is, if I go back to school (local state university) to complete my pre reqs, and assuming I can achieve a 3.5+GPA on those, and an average or above average DAT, would I have any shot at acceptance? I am a URM in the midwest if that matters.

EDIT: I just looked into the URM requirements more, and apparently I am not a URM. I am Hispanic but not Mexican or Puerto Rican.

I am very passionate about this career change, and my family is very supportive. However, I want to make sure the investment and time commitment on pre reqs, DAT, applications, etc., are not worthless if I never had a chance to begin with.

Thanks for your input!

I'm concerned with my previous degree having nothing to do with science, and dropping out of my first bachelor's program, though my GPA was decent.

no need to worry man. Do well in your classes and the DAT, you should be fine. Just kick some serious tail on the DAT
