So I just got my MCAT back and I am a bit dissapointed. But here are my stats, trying to figure out the next step. I am a non-traditional student(32 years of age), came back after a long hiatus. Was confused as a freshman, not sure what I wanted to do, and did poorly. Left school and regressed several years later. My gpa is about 3.65 cumulative, but it has been 4.0 since my return. Scored a 502 on the MCAT, graduate next semester with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Have been volunteering with a non-profit for around 10 years. Around 100 hours of shadowing. Member of one pre-med organization. Have worked several jobs, currently a calculus/chemistry tutor for the university I attend. My nationality is Puerto Rican and I am thinking about applying next cycle, live in Florida. Any constructive criticism will be appreciated. Wanted to go MD but with my MCAT score was thinking DO.

You seem like a very good DO candidate but dont give up on your chances on MD. Try applying to the low tier MD schools out there or retaking the MCAT but only if youre ready and get a killer score

You have a solid GPA and a personal narrative that will differentiate you from the standard applicant. I agree with the above that you are a good DO candidate but shouldn't rule out MD. I would hope that if spend more time preparing for the MCAT and took several practice exams, you would earn a higher score. However, do not retake it until you are consistently performing at or above your target score.

Puertorquentos are considered URM by MD schools, so don't write them off. You're fine for any DO school, I'd say all the FL schools, and don't forget the four PR schools as well.

Ok thanks everyone. Going to apply to the Florida schools, some lower tier MD schools, PR schools, and DO. If I graduate in the spring, when would be the ideal time to get my application in by?

Applications open on June 1st. Try to have your stuff in sooner rather than later as in July/August/September things get backed up.

Is it a bad to apply this cycle?

you're wicked late in the cycle to apply, and a LOT of the schools have AMCAS submission deadlines of 10/15, so you might not even get the schools you want. I said this in a different thread to another non trad, but take the next 8 months or so to really nail your application. Really critically examine and seek advice from your school's advisers to see where you might have gaps and work on filling them way before apps open up.

Write your personal statement, let it sit for a little while, and then come back to it to see if it is still what you want to say and powerful. Then look through the forums to look up secondary prompts for the schools you are interested in ahead of time, and start crafting your responses way ahead of time

and as was said before, really try and take the MCAT again. you seem like you have a great narrative, but I think you would only strengthen your case with a 508+ (hopefully over that, even)

you might still be able to do DO this cycle, but you might as well go for MD (unless you have some really glaring need to start ASAP)

good luck!
