Do I have a chance?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Some questions:

1) Why are you a senior at 26? (I’m not being sarcastic, it’s a legitimant question)
2) What is your MCAT breakdown?
3) Why is your GPA so low?

You do look to have a good shot. The upward trend in GPA will help with your lower GPA.

According to AAMC's Table A-24 around 75.5% of students of your description have gotten into medical school.

500 hours in scribing is great I recommend you also shadow various different specialties.

Having a good shot does not necessarily mean you will get in however. You have to put meticulous care into your application and where you apply.

I'll allow the more senior users advise on whether to go MD vs. DO or to apply both.

With the trend and MCAT, you can try several MD schools (be sure to include HBCUs) and also some DO schools as well.

I would start with all PA schools (although Penn and Pitt might not be worth it) HBCUs, and PCOM on the DO side of things.

It sounds like youve overcome a lot, but had a good run of academic performance recently, so I believe you absolutely have a shot.

I second that. Be sure to add DO schools, but you have good odds!

Hey, I am not new to this site I was a spectator for some time now. I can now post my stats since im in my senior year.

sGPA:3.0
cGPA:3.1 (significant upward trend; went from 2.4 first semester junior to 3.1 second semester senior)
MCAT: 510

300 hours of Organic Chem Research

About 100 hours of volunteering where I did urban outreach informing the community about STD/SID prevention and ways to decrease chances of infection ect.
About 40 hours of volunteering where I provided over the counter pharmaceuticals for surrounding rural areas.

Medical scribe position in ER: over 500 hours (still employed)

Leadership position (Public relations) with this organization at my college.

Honestly do I have a shot?

Btw I am an african american male (26y/o). Residence in Philadelphia, PA.
Yes, you do have a good shot.
Start with the HBCs, and schools of Drexel/Albany class, and U MD, SUNY DS, IU, + WVU as well. Don't forget Geisinger.

@Goro Can OP put anything after high school down as an EC despite having done undergrad for 8 years?

I have two LOR down and thats the professor who I did the 300 hours of research with. The other professor was my cell phys lab instructor and my genetics professor. Im just kind of weary of my third, should it be another science professor? I had a coordinator at the organization i volunteered at in mind.. or maybe a physician i work along side with as a medical scribe? idk im just nervous lol1

Many schools ask for a LOR from a non-science professor.
