i am going to graduate with and undergraduate gpa of 3.1 and a science gpa of 2.7. my mcat score can back to be a 31. can anyone be honest and tell me do i have a legitimate chance of getting into an md school. my volunteering and shadowing is strong as is my extra curriculur activities are also.

thanks,

no, i dont think you have a shot this year. the traditional solution is post bacc.

I wouldn't have much confidence in applying with those stats to an allopathic school. I would suggest doing some post bacc work to get that science over a 3.0 at the very least. Are you saying your MCAT is 31 or you can possibly get that? A 31 is okay, but the grades really need to be your first priority if you want to have a good chance at getting in somewhere.

You may have a shot at DO.......try posting in the "pre osteopathic" forum.....

And while you apply you can take post-bacc and boost that GPA in the case that you don't get interviews....

I think a 31 is a little more than "okay"...
Otherwise, I think the above posters are right...a good post bacc should get you in somewhere (as long as you do well). And what's an extra 20k - 30k in loans when you're already going to be taking out 150k+ for med school anyway. 🙄

A 31 is a great score. Congrats!

Good luck 👍 :luck:

hey, i think if going into medicine is what you want: you should go for it. I was in your shoes (low undergrad GPA, not as high MCAT score as you). But I realized that I was DETERMINED to become a physician. So, it took me three years after graduating to get in. Here's what I did (hope this helps): I did a Master's in what one adcom person told me was a "hard science." Then, I did a research fellowship for a year (total time spent: 3 years).

Believe me, I felt as though I couldn't run from my undergrad GPA. I felt like telling the admissions people "LOOK at the stuff I've done since then, I'm more motivated and determined now" - but I don't think they cared. However, if you can do AWESOME (I mean ALL As) in either a Master's program or a post-bac program, then I definately think you have a shot. Make sure you keep that MCAT score high too.

ALSO, from what they told me, don't forget to continue volunteering during these next couple of years - especially in clinical volunteering and leadership positions.

Bottom line is that they care an awful lot about grades. so you have to be willing to work at it for a couple of years to improve your academic background. Good luck. as I've said before, if I can do it, anyone can do it. So many people told me that I couldn't and to go in an alternate path. If you feel like you're capable, SHOW 'EM!

I have a great link that computes how competitive you would be at medical schools based on your gpa, mcat score, and state of residence. This would be a great place to start.

Hope that helps. Good Luck!!!
