Hiii so I just took the July 13th MCAT for the first time and it's not looking too good. My breakdown is as follows:

PS: 11
BS:11
VR: 7 🙁
WS: S

Ahhhhh frickin verbal. I really don't know what to do about that. I was ranging from 8-13 on the practices and I just don't know how to keep my VR high consistently. Should I retake? I'm really nervous about taking it again mainly because I don't want my sciences to go down. Just as some more background info: I'll hopefully have a double degree in biology and psychology when I graduate in May. I have a 3.7 overall GPA and a 3.62 science. I've done research for almost 2 years, I've shadowed and volunteered in hospitals. I do various extracurricular activites throughout the year.

Soooo what are my changes of getting into an allo school? Should I retake the MCAT?

Thanks all!

Ha, my first MCAT score breakdown is EXACTLY the same as yours, minus the writing score. I, too, labored over whether or not to retake. I consulted with my pre-med advisor, who advised me not to retake, fearing that my science scores would go down, as you said. However, I took it again and went up 9 points, which is a highly unusual increase, but it happened because I changed the way I studied not only verbal, but also the sciences.

I am assuming you are not currently applying, and in that case, you have plenty of time to retake if you wish. I suggest that you speak to your advisor and see what s/he says. Also, your GPA is very good, and depending on your extracurricular activities, you'd probably get in if you apply broadly. But then again, I'm not an advisor or an adcom, so I'm only guessing.

If you are a URM, then I think that the scores you posted are good enough to get you into medical school. I've personally known people with similar scores who have 'made it'. I guess it just depends on which schools you are aiming for: if you are trying to go to very competitive programs, then you may want to take the MCAT again. But here is a list of schools you should look at:
U. Louisville
U. Iowa
Loyola School Medicine in Chicago
Boston U.
U. Illinois
Meharry School of Med
Indiana U.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for replying? How did you change your studying the second time around?

Thanks for you input! I'll definitely take a look at those 🙂

Depends on the programs you are applying to and your minority status. Based on your name, I'm guessing you are from Hawaii (which is where I am from) and a lot of us have had the same problem. If you are a non-minority, I think you might benefit from improving your score (unless you really believe you won't do any better on V and your BS and PS were a fluke). Just a few points makes all the difference in the world from "filtered out" to interview. Otherwise, it looks like you have great stats! I didn't do a whole lot better than you but I did "good enough" and I got into a good school. I believe the verbal score cut-off is alive and intact...Good luck!

Adcoms really do look at the applicant as a whole. If your MCAT is above a 30, or hoving right near a 30 (i.e.-29), AND you have good ECs (important), and a good GPA you are pretty much straight, minority or not. When I took the MCAT, I was confident that whatever I got, was what the Lord wanted me to have. If you are confident like that (and not emotionally stable enough to go through the MCAT hell again--,lol, I know I was), then stick with your score, because if you are a well rounded applicant, you should be competitive.

My MCAT is somewhat similar, insofar as I was also hurt by the verbal on the real test. My breakdown is a 12PS, 7VR, 10BS R. For a 29R.

I figured that I would just apply to a lot of schools and hopefully get a shot somewhere. But I have had a lot more success than I had ever imagined.

I've only turned in about 10 secondaries so far, and I have 4 interviews. Tulane, Vanderbilt, Louisville and USC-Keck.

Pretty much, I wouldn't trip if I were you. I would just hurry and get everything submitted. Good luck.
