Hey,
So I recently decided to apply after this year instead of taking a year off because I was scared. Here goes some stats:

GPA: 3.0
Science gpa: somewhere around a 3.0
University of Michigan
Varsity Track Team (big ten champ, national competitor)
SMDEP (Summer Medical Dental Education Program) at UCLA (6 week program)
USNDA - community service
SAAC (student athlete academic committee)
College Church council

Clearly my gpa is low but I have had an upward trend since freshman year (which didn't go that well)
first semester 3.0
second 2.3
third 3.4
fourth 3.4

thanks!!!

I'm an athlete too and it definitely requires a strong work ethic and careful organization of time. Also, leadership skills. Upward trends are common with athletes in college because it takes a semester or two to adjust. I went 2.8, 2.9, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.7, 3.8, 4.0. My only concern is regardless of the upward turn the GPA is still only at a 3.0. He/ she just needs to talk with people who have been there with those stats. I just haven't heard of many undergrad students getting into dental school with a 3.0 or below without a post-bac.

Need 22+ for a decent chance with a 3.0
20 is stretching it - high chance to waste another year with this.
Under 20 you have a chance at Howard and Meharry.

Aim for 23+

The DAT will make or break you in your case.

Schools want numbers. Do not be mislead by anyone saying your soft factors will overcome your low GPA.

The fact is, almost every applicant these days have rather strong extras.

Also, being an athlete does not carry much weight as one may think when applying to dental school. You need to build up a solid background in things related to dentistry.

i agree mostly with this post but saying below 20 and has chance at Howard and Meharry is not really right. they do accept underrepresented minority with 20 below but not other students who have way low stats, unless OP is URM (in that case you're probably in a good shape as long as you can score around 20)
