Hi everyone! I hope that by posting, some of you may help me in making some important decisions. I plan on applying to dental schools in the US in 2011 round. I applied last round but quite late with poor stats, but I hope to improve my DAT marks and apply early this time. What are my chances next round if I do well on the DATs 20+??

Here are my stats:
- Chemical Engineering degree from University of Toronto in Canada
- Full year of research experience in department of Pharmacy at University of Toronto
- One additional year for prerequisites
- 2 years work experience as a project manager

On my last DAT which I did in Sept 2009, I got these scores:
PAT 21
QA 14
Reading 19
Bio 18
Gen Chem 19
Org chem 17
Total science 18
Academic avg 17

Needless to say, they are not great considering I already have a low GPA. My AADSAS gpa:
BCP: 3
Science: 2.93
Non Science: 3.38
Total: 3

I just need to know whether I have a real chance if I get really good DAT marks. 🙂

ud really need to rock the DAT to have good chances...but its not like ur the worst applicant...apply widely and be willing to get rejects

Well, I think you definitely need to do some post bac work to raise your GPA. The research will help your application but not enough to justify that low of a gpa. I have heard that the Canadian applicant pool trying to get into a US dental schools is extremely competitive. I don't think you have a chance even if you get a 20.

honestly I think you could get in IF you get a 22-23 on average, and no lower than a 20 on any single sub section, with scores like that who cares if your GPA is on the low side. It's possible but you'd better work your butt off...Good Luck

I do think that you have a chance. You have to do your BEST in the next DAT and come up with really good reasons for your low GPA. You need one heck of an essay. It is not hard to convince dental schools about your GPA because your major was hard.

Demonstrate/ show (do not say) evidence of your maturity. Let them know that you are the right material. You admission is not all about your grades.

Statistically speaking, your chances are low (you have lower than average DAT and GPA scores)

But then again, none of us are "GETTING INTO DENTAL SCHOOL EXPERTS"... If we were, we wouldn't be "pre-dents" now would we? 🙂

But honest, the best thing you can do right now is to call up schools and talk to them, see what they have to say. I am 90% sure many of them will suggest a retake on that DAT along with some post-bacc work. But you never know 🙂
